Full job description

Are you a registered mental health nurse looking for a new opportunity to make a real difference to peoples experience of care and treatment during a mental health crisis? The Health Based Place of Safety Team, based at Dane Garth, Furness general hospital, Barrow in Furness, are looking for positive and compassionate nurses, with excellent therapeutic engagement and assessment skills in supporting people experiencing acute distress.

The primary function of the team is to provide safe environment and care for people being detained under Section 136 of the MHA and being brought in by the Police for the purpose of a Mental Health Act Assessment.

The service operates 24/7 and shifts are over this period, including nights, weekends and Bank Holidays.

If you enjoy being part of a patient facing and person centred team working within a fast paced environment, supporting a myriad of presentations then this could be the role for you.

To ensure the safe and appropriate assessment, care and treatment to those brought into the HBPoS.

To liaise with, and work alongside, a range of professionals and external agencies, including police, AMHPs, pharmacy, medical colleagues to facilitate the timely assessment of those detained in the HBPoS under the Mental Health Act.

Having a good understanding of the mental health act and be comfortable in making decisions in keeping with but not limited to, trust policies regarding medication, seclusion, observation levels and physical health monitoring.

Liaison with patients carers, family members and care teams/agencies.

To ensure all clinical and legal procedures and documentation are completed in line with Trust policy and MHA Legislation.

To provide overview of risk management, assess and monitor patients physical and mental health needs whilst in your care, create care plans and ensure peoples needs are met and their views heard.

Leadership of support staff colleagues and facilitation of supervision within a supervision system to colleagues.

Support and work alongside the inpatient ward units, mental health liaison, home based treatment team, initial response service, in absence of patient being admitted to the HBPOS suite.

Successful appointment of the role would lead to training in management of violence and aggression, reducing restrictive practice, management of the deteriorating patient.
