About Us:
Rank Engineering is an established engineering firm specialising in high-quality steel fabrication, detailing, and design solutions for a range of construction and industrial projects. Based in Bristol, we are committed to technical excellence, practical problem-solving, and supporting the development of early-career engineering talent. We are looking for a motivated Engineering Intern to join our team and gain hands-on experience in estimating, operations management and project delivery.
Job Overview:
As an Engineering Intern, you will support the technical and operations team in the delivery of a diverse range of structural and architectural metal fabrication projects. You will learn how structural steelwork is detailed, fabricated, and delivered, while gaining practical experience with technical documentation, engineering standards, and collaboration across design, fabrication, and delivery whilst engaging with customers and suppliers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with preparing 2D and 3D CAD drawings for steel structures under the guidance of experienced engineers and detailers.
- Support the interpretation of engineering drawings, design information, and project specifications for estimations.
- Work with management, fabricators, and project operations to understand how designs are translated into practical manufacturing and site requirements.
- Assist with maintaining project records, drawing registers, and technical documentation as designs are updated.
- Participate in site visits or workshop observations where appropriate to build practical understanding of steel fabrication and installation.
- Provide general technical support to the engineering and project teams, including assisting with estimation from customer drawings for quotation.
- Manage assigned tasks effectively, ask questions when needed, and contribute to meeting agreed project deadlines.
- Carry out basic self-checks to support accuracy, completeness, and continuous improvement in your work.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
- Currently studying, or recently completed, a course in engineering, civil engineering, structural engineering, construction, CAD, design, or a related discipline.
- Interest in CAD software such as AutoCAD, Advance Steel, or similar design packages; previous experience is beneficial but not essential.
- Basic understanding of engineering drawings, construction principles, or structural steelwork would be advantageous.
- Strong interest in steel fabrication, engineering design, and how technical drawings support real-world construction projects.
- Good attention to detail, willingness to learn, and a methodical approach to technical work.
- Clear communication skills and confidence asking questions, sharing progress, and working with colleagues across different teams.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with a positive and professional attitude.
Personal Attributes:
- Curious, motivated, and eager to develop practical engineering and design skills.
- Reliable, organised, and able to manage time effectively when working on assigned tasks.
- Open to feedback and committed to improving through training, mentoring, and hands-on experience.
- Practical, proactive, and enthusiastic about contributing to real engineering projects.
What We Offer:
- Hands-on experience with live engineering and steel fabrication projects.
- Mentoring and support from experienced engineers, detailers, and project professionals.
- Exposure to CAD workflows, fabrication processes, technical documentation, and project coordination.
- A supportive team environment where learning, questions, and professional development are encouraged.
