What will you be doing

In the role of Chief Technical Specialist Power Electronics, you will work closely with the Chief Engineer Power Electronics and provide the Electrified Powertrain function with technical leadership, input and expertise in the field of power electronics design. The role encompasses involvement in all phases of the development cycle from requirements capture through to production intent design, across a wide range of power conversion systems that include traction inverters, DC-DC converters and onboard chargers. Providing guidance on the delivery of new technology and bespoke designs in challenging, diverse and innovative applications will be a regular feature of the role.

As Chief Technical Specialist you will actively participate in industry events, conferences and seminars, positioning Drive System Design (DSD) as a leader in electrification and power electronics design. You will also provide the Business Development function with technical support, directly engaging with new and existing customers, and proposing power electronic solutions to satisfy specified requirements.

The role involves operating in a dynamic project environment including technical, commercial and customer management.

Key responsibilities

Provide technical leadership, guidance and input in the design, development and test of power electronics solutions in DSD, including customer applications and internal research programmes.
Create, develop and maintain technology roadmaps in the field of power electronics.
Lead the development and growth of capabilities associated with power electronics in line with the company strategy.
Develop the value proposition and reputation of power electronics design at DSD by using strong customer relationships and market the associated capabilities in key technical and commercial forums.
Work with the Business Development team to represent power electronics design in commercial environments and generate and approve technical scope for proposals.
Continuous personal development, maintain a position as an industry recognised leader in the field of power electronics, whilst supporting the Chief Engineer Power Electronics in the development of others within Electrified Powertrain.
Work collaboratively with colleagues, clients, stakeholders and contribute to the team ethic at work.
Act as a role model for DSD’s values and professional standards.
Adapt to the needs of a growing and developing business.

What you will need

Essential

Industry leading knowledge of power electronics and magnetics technology, ideally gained in power conversion (e.g. inverters, OBC, DC/DC, chargers etc) in at least two main sectors: automotive, aerospace, off-highway, commercial vehicle, defence, clean energy and/or marine.
Extensive experience of power electronics design from concept through validation testing to volume production and field application.
Very robust practical knowledge of the application of high voltage, high power switching power devices and power modules, particularly SiC, IGBT and GaN, gate drivers and device protection, double pulse and desat testing.
Experience in the design of digital and mixed signal control and interface circuits.
Sound understanding of component failure mechanisms, validation test methodology and OEM / supplier requirements.
Extensive experience in the attenuation of electrical noise and design for EMC.
Familiarity with and knowledge of major standards relating to electrical and functional safety, EMC and OEM requirements including insulation systems and creepage / clearance requirements.
An outstanding technical reputation in the field of power electronics, recognised globally within relevant sectors and wider industry.
Excellent customer facing skills and cultural awareness when working with a wide range of global customers and suppliers. This is to be combined with an ability to lead technical training and mentoring of colleagues and customer engineers of differing abilities.
A methodical, structured approach to decision making and problem solving (DDR, 8D etc).
A degree or higher in (technical area) engineering OR related discipline OR equivalent demonstratable experience.

Desirable

Familiarity with digital control schemes and motor operation for prevalent motor technologies (PM, AFM, IM, SR etc).
Experience in the simulation and design of fluid systems, thermal simulation and management in power electronics systems.
Training and experience in the safe use of high power, high voltage test equipment such as high-power battery emulators, PSUs, power analysers, loads, motor test dynos etc within a dedicated high voltage development lab and EDU test facility, up to over 1MW and 1kVdc.
A proven record of successfully planning, selling, leading and delivering large, multi-disciplinary product development projects.
