We are seeking a skilled and reliable HGV Class 2 Qualified Gully Tanker Operator to join our Highways Maintenance Team. This important role involves operating and maintaining gully tankers to service over 44,000 highway gullies across the city. The operator will conduct both routine and ad hoc cleansing, removing liquid waste and clearing blockages to ensure the drainage system functions efficiently.
The position requires strong driving skills and a commitment to safety and excellent customer service. Key responsibilities include safely manoeuvring gully tankers to perform drainage and waste removal tasks, emptying and cleaning gullies, drains, and interceptors according to strict health, safety, and environmental standards. The operator will also perform daily vehicle checks and maintenance to keep tankers in optimal condition.
Adherence to health and safety protocols is essential, alongside accurate recording of job data and maintenance logs using provided digital tools. The role also demands professionalism and courtesy when interacting with clients and the public, representing the authority positively while delivering high-quality service.

About You
To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally have…
- Experience of operating gully tankers or similar vacuum/jetting equipment
- Some Knowledge of drainage systems and waste disposal procedures
- Experience of working in traffic sensitive area, including traffic management techniques Confined space awareness / training
- Ability to receive and interpret verbal/written instructions
- Able to work with limited supervision and organise your workload
- Ability to lead and motivate teams effectively (advantageous)
- Experience of driving and working with goods vehicles such as tankers of vacuum equipment, defect reporting and completing daily driving logs
- Experience of Health & Safety practices
- Excellent communication and organisation skills
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to use mobile phones and electronic devices to record accurate data
- Class C Driving Qualification
- NRSWA Operative
- Good Literacy, writing and numeracy skills
