We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Youth Mentor to support and guide young individuals in their personal and educational development. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children and a strong commitment to fostering positive relationships. As a Youth Mentor, you will play a crucial role in helping young people navigate challenges, set goals, and achieve their potential.
The Role
As a Freelance School Mentor, you will work directly with students in a school in Yeovil, Somerset on a one-to-one basis, delivering tailored mentoring sessions designed to offering guidance and support in various aspects of their lives, including behavioural/academic challenges.
You’ll collaborate closely with school staff and The Altering Group’s Mentoring Service Manager to ensure support is targeted, effective, and consistent with the school’s pastoral priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver 1:1 mentoring sessions to students referred by the school on the school premises and in the community
- Build trusting, professional relationships that promote emotional growth and self awareness
- Support students in setting and achieving personal and educational goals
- Liaise with pastoral leads and other staff to ensure consistent communication and joined-up support
- Maintain accurate records of sessions and progress for reporting purposes
- Adhere to safeguarding, confidentiality, and professional boundaries at all times
About You
- You are self-employed and confident managing your own caseload, schedule, and professional boundaries
- You have experience supporting young people — ideally within schools, youth work, counselling, or community settings
- Empathy, patience, and a genuine interest in mentoring youth from diverse backgrounds
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team while also being self-motivated
- You have strong communication and record-keeping skills
- You hold (or are willing to obtain) an Enhanced DBS check
- A relevant qualification in mentoring, counselling, education, or youth work
