PEGS Volunteer Role Description - Voluntary Online Community Moderator

About Us

PEGS is a lived-experience-led organisation supporting parents, carers, and professionals impacted by Child to Parent Abuse (CPA). We’re passionate about creating long-term change in how CPA is understood and addressed across the UK. Aim of the Role

PEGS is recruiting a team of Voluntary Online Community Connectors to help expand the support we provide to parents, carers and professionals affected by Child to Parent Abuse (CPA).

This role is centred around providing a welcoming and supportive online presence. Volunteers are often the first point of contact for parents and professionals through our website live chat and Facebook peer support community. By responding to enquiries, signposting people to relevant support and resources, and helping to maintain safe online spaces, volunteers play a vital role in ensuring no family feels alone.

You don't need to have all the answers. Full training and ongoing support will be provided, and volunteers will always have access to the wider PEGS team for advice and guidance.

This support will help us strengthen our services and continue working towards a future where no parent or carer feels alone in what they’re experiencing.

Days/Times

This is a flexible volunteer role. Our only requirement is that you can offer a minimum of 8 hours of volunteering per month.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

● Responding to enquiries through the PEGS website live chat, providing a friendly first point of contact and signposting parents and professionals to appropriate support and resources.

● Helping parents, carers and professionals navigate the PEGS website and access relevant information.

● Supporting the moderation of the PEGS Closed Facebook Peer Support Group, helping to maintain a safe, respectful and supportive online community.

● Responding appropriately to comments and posts within the Facebook community where required.

● Raising any safeguarding concerns with the Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) and/or the Volunteer Programme Lead.

● Assisting with project reporting by providing feedback and testimonials where required.

● Participating in training, volunteer supervision and team meetings.

● Completing any reasonable administrative tasks associated with the role.

● Undertaking any other reasonable duties appropriate to the position.

Additional Responsibilities

● Understand and follow PEGS' Health & Safety procedures.

● Maintain confidentiality and understand safeguarding responsibilities for children and vulnerable adults.

● Work in line with PEGS' values, policies and expected standards at all times.

Essential Skills and Experience

We are looking for volunteers who are:

● Friendly, approachable and empathetic.

● Able to communicate confidently and sensitively with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

● Comfortable working as part of a supportive team.

● IT Proficient using computers, internet and common software, including Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.

● Organised and able to manage their time effectively.

● Able to use their own initiative while recognising when to seek support.

● Willing to learn new systems, processes and digital tools.

Desirable Skills and Experience

● Experience working within domestic abuse, safeguarding or support services.

● Experience supporting vulnerable individuals.

● Experience moderating online communities or responding to enquiries through live chat, social media or customer support platforms.

● Knowledge of Child to Parent Abuse (CPA) and the barriers faced by parents and carers experiencing it.

Training and Support

Every volunteer will:

● Receive PEGS' mandatory induction and training.

● Receive training specific to the responsibilities of the role.

● Be supported by the Volunteer Programme Lead through regular supervision and guidance.

● Have access to additional learning and development opportunities relevant to the role.

● Never be expected to carry out duties unsupervised until they feel confident and competent.

● Be provided with the equipment needed to carry out the role.

Additional Information

● Volunteers are covered by PEGS' insurance.

● Volunteers must be aged 18 or over. There is no upper age limit, provided the essential skills are met.

● Volunteers are required to complete an enhanced DBS check due to working with vulnerable adults and children.

This role involves working directly with parents who are experiencing Child-to-Parent Abuse (CPA). Due to the emotionally demanding nature of this work and the potential for vicarious trauma, the role may not be suitable for individuals who are currently experiencing CPA themselves or who have been personally impacted within the past 12 months.
