ABOUT EPG:
EPG is a specialist geoenvironmental consultancy delivering design, consultancy, and technical services in ground risk, sustainable drainage, structural waterproofing, and environmental monitoring. We work across a broad range of projects, combining technical expertise with a practical approach to problem solving. Our focus is on delivering high quality, proportionate solutions that meet client needs and stand up in the real world.
Based in our Basildon office, we have an opportunity for an Instrumentation Technician to join our environmental monitoring team. At EPG, we design, deploy, and manage continuous monitoring systems across a range of environmental and construction projects. This includes the use of specialist monitoring equipment, supporting data systems, and client-facing portals that provide real-time sensor data into site conditions.
JOB PURPOSE:
This role is suited to someone at an early stage in their career, whether from a school, college or graduate background, or with some practical experience. We are seeking an individual with a natural interest in how things work, who is comfortable working hands-on with equipment. This may have been developed through work, academic study, or personal projects such as DIY electronics or Raspberry Pi.
The role will be primarily office-based in Basildon, with occasional visits to site to support the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of monitoring systems. A full driving license is therefore required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Undertake calibration, maintenance, and preparation of monitoring equipment to ensure all systems are ready for deployment and operating reliably.
- Carry out fault finding, diagnosis, and repair of equipment, escalating more complex issues where required.
- Support the deployment and retrieval of monitoring equipment, including preparation of kits, logistics, and occasional site-based installation and servicing.
- Manage and maintain monitoring data via the client portal, ensuring data is accurate, up to date, and accessible to internal teams and clients.
- Assist with stock control and equipment tracking, including maintaining inventory, booking equipment in and out, and identifying maintenance or replacement needs.
- Support the preparation of documentation, including calibration records, equipment logs, and basic project records.
- Provide support to the monitoring team and Technical Manager in relation to equipment setup, configuration, and general system maintenance.
- Assist with general workshop and laboratory organisation, ensuring a safe, clean, and efficient working environment.
- Attend site where required to support installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of monitoring systems.
- Work in accordance with company procedures and ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 standards, maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and environmental compliance.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
- A qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. Environmental Science, Engineering, Electronics or similar), or equivalent practical experience.
- A demonstrable interest in instrumentation, electronics, or how equipment works, ideally through hands-on experience (e.g. DIY projects, Raspberry Pi, hobby electronics, or similar).
- A methodical and organised approach to work, with attention to detail when handling equipment, data, and records.
- Basic IT proficiency, including confidence using standard software (e.g. Excel, Word) and the ability to learn new systems and platforms.
- A proactive attitude, with a willingness to learn, take ownership of tasks, and support the wider team.
- Good problem-solving skills, with an interest in fault finding and diagnosing issues.
- Full UK driving license.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES:
- Experience in a relevant environment (e.g. laboratory work, technical support, electronics, or field-based roles).
- Experience working with monitoring equipment, sensors, or data logging systems.
- Experience using or managing online platforms or data portals.
- Previous laboratory or workshop experience, including calibration or equipment maintenance.
- An interest in environmental monitoring, construction, or engineering sectors.
