Full job description

Role Overview

We are seeking a skilled and versatile Maintenance Worker to support the upkeep, repair, and development of zoo facilities and animal habitats. This role combines general maintenance duties with hands-on woodwork and construction responsibilities, as well as active collaboration with management and animal care teams to design and build new or improved habitats that meet high standards of animal welfare, safety, and durability.

The ideal candidate will be practical, adaptable, and comfortable working in a dynamic environment where priorities can shift quickly based on operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

General Maintenance

Carry out routine inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance across zoo buildings, enclosures, pathways, and infrastructure
Troubleshoot and resolve issues with structures, fixtures, fencing, doors, gates, and basic utilities
Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with zoo safety standards

Woodwork & Fabrication

Design, build, and repair wooden structures including platforms, shelters, fencing, enrichment items, and enclosure fittings.
Interpret drawings, sketches, and plans for construction and repair tasks.
Maintain tools and equipment in safe working order.

Habitat Construction & Improvement

Work closely with zoo management, and animal care teams to construct new animal habitats and modify existing ones
Contribute practical input during planning stages to ensure designs are feasible, durable, and safe
Assist in installing habitat features such as climbing structures, nesting areas, barriers, and enrichment systems

Collaboration & Planning

Communicate progress, challenges, and material needs effectively
Work alongside external contractors when required

Health & Safety

Follow all site health and safety procedures, including working around animals and in restricted areas
Ensure tools, machinery, and materials are used safely and stored correctly
Maintain a clean and hazard-free working environment

Required Skills & Experience

Proven experience in general maintenance or facilities work
Strong woodwork/carpentry skills (essential)
Ability to read and interpret basic construction drawings or plans
Experience using hand and power tools safely and effectively
Practical problem-solving ability and adaptability
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Personal Qualities

Reliable and safety-conscious
Practical, hands-on, and resourceful
Good communication skills
Able to manage varied workloads and shifting priorities
Respectful of animals and committed to welfare-focused work

Working Conditions

Outdoor and indoor work in all weather conditions
Physical work including lifting, climbing, and manual labour
May involve working near or within animal enclosures under supervision

Pay: £13.00-£15.00 per hour
