Mayor's Political Assistant
£49,056 - £52,194 per annum
Fixed Term until April 2027

This is a unique opportunity to work at the heart of political leadership in one of London’s most dynamic boroughs.

As the Mayor’s Political Assistant, you will provide trusted political advice and hands-on support to the Mayor of Newham, helping to deliver his priorities for residents and progress the Mayor's priorities across the council and beyond.

You’ll play a key connecting role between the Mayor, councillors and officers — ensuring that political priorities are understood, reflected in council business, and translated into delivery.

This is a fast-paced, high-profile role suited to someone who thrives on complexity, can manage competing priorities, and is comfortable operating in a politically sensitive environment.

What you'll be doing

You will:

Provide political advice and support to the Mayor across his full portfolio
Prepare the Mayor for key meetings (Cabinet, Council, scrutiny and external engagements), ensuring strong political insight and briefing
Help shape and deliver political campaigns, communications and messaging
Draft briefings, speeches, and communications in the Mayor’s voice
Build strong relationships with councillors, political stakeholders and partners, including the Labour Group
Monitor national, London-wide and party-political developments and advise on implications for Newham

What we're looking for

We are looking for someone who is:

Politically aware, with a strong understanding of local government and the wider political context
Able to navigate sensitive issues and provide clear, sound judgement under pressure
A strong communicator — able to write clearly, influence others, and tailor messages to different audiences

About Us
The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east. It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the Theatre Royal Stratford East offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.
