Leeds Private Hospital is seeking a dedicated, professional, and highly motivated Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) to join our expanding surgical team. About the Role
As an Operating Department Practitioner, you will play a pivotal role in supporting patients throughout their perioperative journey. You will work alongside consultants, anaesthetists, scrub teams, and recovery staff to ensure safe, seamless, and compassionate care before, during, and after surgical procedures.

Key ResponsibilitiesTheatre Preparation & Clinical Support
- Prepare and maintain operating theatres to the highest standards, ensuring all equipment, instruments, and consumables are available, safe, and ready for use.
- Ensure all theatre areas comply with infection prevention and control standards.
- Maintain strict aseptic technique and support sterile field management.
- Assist with theatre lists and ensure efficient patient flow.
Anaesthetic Support
- Assist anaesthetists with induction, maintenance, and emergence from anaesthesia.
- Monitor patient observations and clinical condition throughout procedures.
- Prepare anaesthetic equipment, airway devices, and medications safely.
- Respond appropriately to any clinical deterioration or emergencies.
Recovery & Patient Care
- Provide safe and compassionate care in the immediate post-operative period.
- Monitor patient recovery, pain management, and comfort.
- Escalate concerns promptly and effectively.
- Ensure accurate handovers to ward / discharge teams.
Patient Safety & Governance
- Uphold patient dignity, confidentiality, and safeguarding at all times.
- Ensure WHO surgical safety checklists are completed and followed.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
- Participate in audits, governance meetings, and service improvement initiatives.
Stock & Equipment Management
- Support ordering, stock control, and maintenance of clinical supplies.
- Ensure equipment is regularly checked and reported if faulty.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with CQC and hospital standards.
Essential RequirementsQualifications
- HCPC Registered Operating Department Practitioner – Essential
- Recognised qualification in Operating Department Practice (DipHE / BSc ODP or equivalent)
- Current UK registration and right to work in the UK – Essential
- UK-based applicants only
Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in an acute theatre setting preferred
- Experience in:
- Anaesthetics
- Recovery
- Scrub / theatre support
- Experience in private healthcare is desirable but not essential
Skills & Knowledge
- Excellent understanding of:
- Perioperative care
- Aseptic technique
- Infection prevention & control
- Patient safety and risk management
- Strong understanding of medical terminology and physiology
- Ability to work calmly under pressure and adapt quickly
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Strong attention to detail and organisational ability
Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Essential
- Immediate Life Support (ILS) / Advanced Life Support (ALS) – desirable
