Job Title: CNC Setter/Operator/ Programmer
Responsible to: Production Manager
Hourly Rate: £33,280.00r+ pending on experience
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled CNC Miller to set, operate, and program CNC milling machines and machining centres producing precision components to tight tolerances. The ideal candidate is confident with both online (at machine) and offline programming, has hands-on experience with Hurco milling machines and the WinMax control interface, can interpret engineering drawings, and is comfortable taking a job from first-off through to full production.
Key Responsibilities
- Set and operate CNC milling machines and machining centres to produce precision components to drawing
- Program both online at the machine control and offline, selecting the most efficient method for the job
- Write and edit conversational programs on Hurco WinMax, and G-code programs where required
- Prove out new programs and edit toolpaths and offsets at the machine to achieve required sizes and surface finishes
- Select and set tooling, cutters, and workholding (vices, clamps, fixtures, rotary tables)
- Interpret engineering drawings and GD&T specifications to plan the machining sequence
- Carry out first-off, in-process, and final inspection using standard measuring equipment
- Adjust speeds, feeds, and offsets to manage tool wear, chatter, swarf control, and cycle time
- Troubleshoot machining issues and resolve dimensional or surface-finish problems
- Carry out routine machine maintenance and maintain setup sheets, tooling lists, and production records
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience setting and operating CNC milling machines and machining centres
- Hands-on experience with Hurco milling machines
- Experience programming and operating through the WinMax interface (essential)
- Competent in both online (at-machine) and offline programming
- Solid understanding of G-code and M-code, tooling, and machining fundamentals
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and GD&T
- Confident use of measuring equipment and the ability to work consistently to tight tolerances
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with production runs as well as short-run and one-off work
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM packages such as Fusion 360, Mastercam, SolidCAM or Edgecam for offline programming
- Knowledge of metrology and inspection tools (callipers, micrometres, bore gauges & height gauges)
- Some turning or wider general machining experience
- Relevant certification or technical education in mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, or a related field
