Support Worker – Young People (16–18) – Refugee & Asylum Support
Location: Handsworth, Birmingham.
Salary: £24,785 per annum
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent

We are currently seeking a Support Worker to join our specialist team supporting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) and other young people aged 16–18 who have newly arrived in the UK. This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to help vulnerable young people settle, recover, and thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Provide day-to-day emotional and practical support to young people placed in supported accommodation.
Support young people in developing independent living skills, such as cooking, cleaning, and managing finances.
Assist with integration into education, training, or employment pathways.
Promote safeguarding and wellbeing, reporting concerns and following internal and statutory procedures.
Encourage and support cultural identity while helping young people adapt to life in the UK.
Liaise with social workers, interpreters, and external agencies to ensure holistic support.
Maintain clear, accurate records and contribute to risk assessments and support planning.

What We’re Looking For

Experience supporting young people or vulnerable individuals, ideally within a care, housing, or youth service setting.
Understanding of the specific needs of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children or refugee youth.
Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust and rapport with young people from diverse backgrounds.
Knowledge of a second language (e.g. Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Kurdish, Dari, or Albanian) is highly desirable.
Ability to work independently, remain calm under pressure, and manage sensitive situations with care.
A trauma-informed, culturally aware, and non-judgemental approach.
