Caseworker (Maternity Cover) – Office of Liam Byrne MP

Job Details

If you genuinely want to listen to people, understand the challenges they are facing and help make a difference in the local community, then this role could be for you.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the constituency office of Liam Byrne MP in Birmingham Hodge Hill and Solihull North, supporting constituents with a wide range of issues including housing, immigration, benefits, health services, education and local government matters.

You will work closely with constituents, government departments, local authorities, charities and community organisations to help resolve problems, secure answers and ensure local people receive the support they need.

This is a full-time maternity cover position from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Flexible working arrangements may be considered.

The sort of person we’re looking for:

You care about helping people and improving the local community.
You can communicate clearly and sensitively, both in writing and in person.
You are organised, able to manage competing priorities and maintain accurate records.
You use initiative, think practically and can work through complex issues to find solutions.
You can handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately and understand the importance of data protection.
You ideally have experience in casework, advice services, community engagement or roles involving direct public support.
An understanding of local issues affecting Birmingham communities would be beneficial.

You will be responsible for:

Managing and resolving constituency casework across a wide range of issues.
Liaising with government departments, local councils, housing providers and other agencies on behalf of constituents.
Supporting the MP at constituency surgeries, meetings and community events where required.
Drafting correspondence, maintaining casework records and ensuring all information is handled confidentially and accurately.
Assisting with local campaigns, stakeholder engagement and community outreach activities.
Helping ensure constituents receive timely updates and effective support.

The role is primarily office based in the constituency. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required, along with occasional travel within the constituency.

Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to public service, awareness of UK political and parliamentary processes, and an understanding of the values of the Labour Party.

Upon appointment, the successful candidate will be required to comply with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO).

Salary: £27,000 per annum.

Salary and conditions will be in line with IPSA staffing guidelines.

Pay: £27,000.00 per year
