Free Your Mind is a Grassroots Childhood Domestic Abuse not for profit service based in South Woodford, London. Our mission is: To provide early trauma intervention so young people, who are victims of domestic abuse, develop essential self-care tools to thrive and cultivate healthier relationships in the years to come.
About the role
You will provide activities targeted at 7-18 year olds victims of childhood domestic abuse/violence, to improve their wellbeing, self-awareness, confidence, and self-esteem, so they can thrive like their peers generating a positive greater wider impact for those around them. You will provide young people affected by domestic abuse/violence with our 1-2-1 8 weekly therapy sessions to help them recover, cope and heal from the trauma experienced. In addition to this core service, you will also be responsible for running young peoples focus groups and our summer holiday clubs. You will be supported to deliver these by other members of the team.
Full Job description
- The job role will be for the period of 12 months as of TBC with the potential to continue employment subject to successful development and partnership renewal.
- You will provide weekly therapeutic sessions with Children and Young victims of Domestic Abuse referred via Birmingham City Council on a full time basis.
- You will provide monitoring throughout the process using our OASIS platform, including collating feedback and flagging any safeguarding issues; and will provide an end of session report for the referrals service
- You will be required to contact all families to ensure they are happy to go ahead and make arrangements for sessions to take place.
- You will provide counselling support to children, young people and adults aged between 7 - 18 years old.
- You will be expected to manage your own diary and travel to schools/community hubs and provide online sessions.
- You will work closely with children, young people and adults who are experiencing a range of emotional, psychological and physical difficulties as a result of domestic abuse and will seek to empower them by providing a safe space to explore their experiences
- To run bi-monthly focus groups - an opportunity for us to speak with young people about their experience of our service
- To run summer holiday clubs which provide group activities such as gaming, films, arts and crafts and cookery
- To Signpost to other services and/or make referrals on behalf of families if required
- To work closely with other agencies and building relationships with other professionals to support in your understanding of the needs of the children and young people you will be working with and make recommendations
- Create effective safety plans
- To raise all safeguarding concerns with the allocated Designated Safeguarding Leads and respond accordingly.
- To be able to work alone and adhere to FYM Lone Working policy
- To be professionally curious and plan sessions to meet the needs of the child, young person and adult
- You will be required to provide a safe environment and maintain confidentiality
- Ensure you adhere to Data Protection and GDPR regulations when recording and storing information. Report any breaches of confidentiality promptly
- You will be supported by our small grassroots nonprofit team, passionate about helping Child and Young victims of Domestic Abuse

35 hours per week
£28,000 (inc NI & pension)

Hours of Work
It is expected that the hours will be 10 am to 6 pm, with one hour off for lunch, Monday to Friday.
Annual Leave
Full Time entitlement: 30 days per annum
Holiday entitlement runs from 1st April - 31st March each calendar year
SickPay 4 weeks full pay per year.
Ability to commute
Birmingham based, with a car to commute around borough for therapeutic sessions with the Children and Young People (required) travel expenses will be covered - expenses submission weekly on agreed day

Due to the nature of this role a female only counsellor is required in order to ensure the effective delivery of this service.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- Qualified to a minimum of Diploma Level 4 or Level 5 Counselling Qualification/ Psychology/Criminology Degree
- Experience of working with young people.
- Experience of assessing, engaging, and working with young people
- Experience of delivering counselling interventions in a focused and time limited manner
- Ability to form positive working relationships with young people, colleagues, and other professionals.
- Ability to work therapeutically with children and young people through a variety of mediums including face to face and online.
- Knowledge of the professional issues relating to counselling provision, including safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Accredited with HCPC, BACP, UKRC or equivalent or actively working towards accreditation.
- Ability to keep accurate records and complete monitoring & evaluation within agreed deadlines.
- Ability to work within the confines of confidentiality.
- Ability to manage time, to plan own workload and evaluate performance.
- Ability to manage confidential information within project and organisational guidelines.
- Able to use initiative, adaptable and flexible.
TRAINING AND INDUCTION
The successful candidate can expect a full induction, an Enhanced DBS check, and to be trained in Domestic Abuse and Child-protection and Safeguarding as required.
- Ensure the maintenance of standards of practice according to the employer and any regulating, professional and accrediting bodies
- Ensure that client confidentiality is protected at all times.
- Be aware of and keep up to date with advances in the spheres of your chosen modality and other psychological therapies.
- Ensure clear professional objectives are identified, discussed and reviewed with senior therapists on a regular basis as part of continuing professional development (CPD).
- Attend managerial supervision on a regular basis as agreed with your Manager.
- Participate in individual performance review and respond to agreed objectives.
- Keep up to date all records in relation to CPD and ensure personal development plan maintains up to date specialist knowledge of latest theoretical and service delivery models/developments.
- Participate in service improvement by highlighting issues and implementing changes in practice.
