About Bargain Hardware
Bargain Hardware specialises in high-quality refurbished IT hardware, offering tailored solutions for everyone - from individuals buying a single used workstation, to large enterprises equipping entire data centres with refurbished servers. Our mission is to provide affordable, sustainable and reliable IT systems configured to meet your exact needs.
Our ecommerce operation runs across bargainhardware.co.uk, our German storefront, and eBay (via M2E Pro), all powered by Magento 2.
The role
We're looking for a hands on, commercially minded Digital Design & Content Lead to own the visual, written and on screen experience of Bargain Hardware. Ideally, you've got a genuine interest in tech and computer hardware. You don't need to be a sysadmin, but the more you care about what we sell, the better your work will be.
This role is ready for someone to really own it and make it their own. The brand, the website and the design function are in good shape but there's no formal design system yet, no fixed playbook, and plenty of room to set the direction. If you want to shape how this works rather than inherit someone else's process, you'll have the space to do it.
Reporting to the Head of Ecommerce, you'll work across four disciplines: UX, content, UI design, and general graphic and asset design. We know that's a broad remit. If you're a generalist who's comfortable across all four, or a specialist with real depth in one or two, we'd love to hear from you. You'll have a Design & Content Apprentice working alongside you who supports across the board, and you'll work closely with the Ecommerce, Trade and Products teams to turn commercial priorities into a buying experience that converts.
Key responsibilities
- Design and optimise the pages that sell the kit. Home, category, product, landing pages and checkout. Figma preferred, shipping in Magento 2.
- Understand how buyers move through the site and improve it. Spot where they fall off, form a hypothesis, ship the test in VWO, read the result honestly.
- Use GA4, Microsoft Clarity and Google Search Console to back design decisions with evidence rather than opinion.
- Write and/or coordinate long form technical content. Buying guides, comparison articles, how to and blog posts that rank well in search and help technical buyers make confident decisions.
- Write on site copy in Magento 2: category pages, landing pages, product descriptions and merchandising blocks.
- Oversee photography and video in house and write the scripts and on screen copy that go with them.
- Design and build email campaigns in Mailchimp, working alongside the apprentice to build out segmentation, automation and reporting.
- Design creative for organic social (LinkedIn, Facebook, X) and paid media campaigns across Google, Meta and other channels.
- Design BAU sales collateral as needed. Assets, print and the one off bits that come up when the business needs something designed.
- Build email as a template system rather than one off artwork, so campaigns can ship fast without losing the look.
- Build out a proper design system in Figma and Canva so the rest of the business can build on brand without reinventing things.
- Set the standard for everything. You're the final eye before work goes live.
- Manage and mentor our Design & Content Apprentice, and support their formal learning programme.
- Stay close to trends, emerging formats and platform changes, and bring the good ones into our work.
Skills & experience
Essential
- Strong background in digital design within an ecommerce, retail or B2B environment, with demonstrable UI and UX work in your portfolio.
- Confident designing in Figma or similar. Component libraries, auto layout, prototyping, and working in a shared design system.
- Hands on Magento 2 experience, or comparable enterprise ecommerce platform experience and the appetite to come up to speed quickly.
- Demonstrable experience writing or coordinating long form, technical or commercial content. Blog posts, buying guides, category pages and product copy, with examples in your portfolio.
- Experience designing and building email campaigns in Mailchimp, or another comparable ESP.
- Deep understanding of typography, colour, layout, visual hierarchy and accessibility.
- Strong written English and a feel for tone of voice. Able to write commercial and technical copy as well as design around it.
- Comfort leading projects, managing your own time and prioritising across competing demands.
- A portfolio that demonstrates range, polish and commercial outcomes, not just nice looking work.
Desirable
- Comfortable using Canva or similar for fast turnaround channel design and brand system work alongside Figma.
- Working knowledge of HTML and CSS to the level needed for email build and CMS tweaks.
- Comfort reading GA4 and Microsoft Clarity to inform design decisions. You don't need to be an analyst, but you should know what a heatmap or a funnel drop off is telling you.
- Experience running A/B and conversion tests in VWO or a comparable tool.
- Working knowledge of SEO fundamentals and how content and UX decisions affect organic performance.
- Experience building or contributing to a design system from the ground up.
- Video production and editing in Premiere, After Effects or equivalent.
- Product photography skills. Lighting, studio setup and basic retouching.
- Experience with multi region or multi language ecommerce sites.
- Background in IT hardware, technology resale or a similarly technical sector.
About you
- Strategic thinker with a hands on, get stuck in attitude.
- Commercially aware. You understand creative exists to drive revenue.
- Confident articulating ideas and pushing back when a brief won't work.
- Organised, self directed and calm when multiple things compete for your attention.
- Genuinely interested in mentoring and bringing on a more junior team member.
- Based within commutable distance of Ribchester, Lancashire, and happy with a 3 days in office hybrid pattern.
What we offer
- £36,000 to £40,000 base salary, depending on experience.
- Competitive monthly performance bonus.
- Hybrid working. 3 days at our Ribchester office, 2 days from home.
- Modern kit, full Figma and Canva licences.
- Genuine ownership of a brand with real reach, not buried inside a marketing committee.
- Real career runway as the business grows across the UK, Germany and wider Europe.
- A small, focused team where good work ships fast and gets seen.
- On site parking and a friendly working environment.
