Job Purpose
The Steel Fabrication Factory Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of a busy structural steel fabrication facility, ensuring projects are manufactured safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to the required quality standards. The role involves overseeing production, workforce management, quality control, health and safety compliance, plant maintenance, and continuous improvement of factory operations.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Operations
Manage all fabrication activities within the workshop, including cutting, drilling, welding, assembly, and finishing.
Ensure fabrication programmes are delivered on time and within budget.
Coordinate labour, materials, plant, and subcontract resources to maximise productivity.
Monitor project progress and report regularly to senior management.
Work closely with drawing office, contracts managers, site teams, and procurement staff.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Promote and maintain a strong health and safety culture throughout the factory.
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, company procedures, and industry standards.
Conduct toolbox talks, safety briefings, and regular workplace inspections.
Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses and implement corrective actions.
Quality Assurance
Ensure all fabricated steelwork meets specification, drawings, and quality standards.
Oversee inspection and quality control procedures.
Manage non-conformance issues and implement corrective actions.
Support compliance with CE/UKCA marking and fabrication quality requirements.
Staff Management
Lead, motivate, and develop workshop supervisors, welders, fabricators, and labourers.
Manage staffing levels and allocate resources effectively.
Conduct performance reviews and identify training requirements.
Foster a positive and productive working environment.
Commercial Awareness
Monitor labour efficiency and production costs.
Assist in identifying cost-saving opportunities and process improvements.
Support project managers in achieving profitability targets.
Ensure efficient use of materials and minimise waste.
Plant & Equipment
Oversee maintenance and servicing schedules for factory equipment.
Ensure machinery is operated safely and efficiently.
Identify requirements for investment in new plant and equipment.
Essential Requirements
Proven experience managing a structural steel fabrication workshop.
Strong knowledge of fabrication, welding, and steelwork manufacturing processes.
Excellent leadership and people management skills.
Good understanding of health and safety legislation.
Ability to read and interpret fabrication and engineering drawings.
Strong organisational and planning abilities.
Computer literate with experience using production management systems and Microsoft Office.
Pay: £32,000.00-£45,000.00 per year
