An opportunity to join J&E Hall as an apprentice engineer has become available for an enthusiastic and motivated individual. The Apprentice will become both technically competent, as well as learning effective communication with customers, deliver appropriate service, and eventually being able to recognise and exploit potential sales opportunities.
We are particularly interested in applications from people based in the following areas:
Cwmbran, Swansea, Pontypool, Bridgend, Newport, Risca, Pontypridd, Caerphilly.
This is due to the locations and bases of some of our customer sites.
Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- To be responsible to the Service Manager but work at all times under the supervision of qualified persons and departments nominated by them
- Whilst being supervised, to assist trained qualified Service Engineers in the maintenance and repair of refrigeration, air conditioning and process plant within a pre-set timescale, with particular emphasis being placed on our approach toward Health and Safety
- To attend college as required, to achieve City & Guilds qualifications at both mechanical and technical level (a Level 3 Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump (RACHP) qualification) completing training schedules and workbooks as appropriate
- To liaise with office administration teams and engineers to ensure work is being carried out to their satisfaction
- To correctly complete work reports/time sheets on time to enable invoices to be submitted with minimum delay and to maintain regular contact with the service centre
- To comply with requirements of Health and Safety Practices as outlined in the Company Health and Safety procedure
- Any ad-hoc duties asked by the Service Manager

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

- Comply with health and safety, regulations and standards. Apply safe systems of work, including carrying out a risk assessment.
- Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations and standards for example prevention of refrigerant emissions, segregate resources for reuse and, recycling and disposal of waste.
- Position, fix, joint and test, pipework and electrical circuits.
- Test, charge with refrigerant and commission vapour compression systems.
- Test and commission electrical and electronic control systems applicable to vapour compression systems.
- Interpret information and data from log books and diagrams.
- perform servicing, maintenance, fault diagnosis and rectification procedures and techniques on vapour compression systems including routine and reactive maintenance, installation of components and safe electrical isolation of supply.
- Perform routine service, maintenance, fault diagnosis and rectification procedures and techniques on electrical and electrical control systems applicable to vapour compression systems including carrying out safe isolation procedures.
- Decommission vapour compression systems, safe recovery and disposal of equipment, hazardous waste refrigerant transfer.
- Decommission electrical and electronic systems applicable to vapour compression systems.
- Adjust vapour compression system operating parameters to achieve reductions in carbon emissions.
- Maximise performance of vapour compression systems by determining heating and cooling loads and selecting and balancing components and systems.
- Retrofit and retro fill existing equipment to lower GWP refrigerants.
- Mitigate risks of refrigerants including environmental, toxicity and flammability hazards.
- Identify and use tools and equipment.
- Communicate with others verbally and in writing.
- Complete a customer handover.
- Work collaboratively with clients or stakeholders to solve problems.

Training schedule
- The Level 3 Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump (RACHP) Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard is run over 36 months
- Apprentices must also achieve a Level 2 certificate in F Gas and ODS regulation category 1 to complete the course
More training information
- The course is provided by the City of Liverpool College and runs for 7 weeks per year split into 1-week blocks
- Apprentices are required to stay for up to 5 nights per week (travelling home at weekends) within a prearranged guest hotel in Liverpool, over the 1-week block period at college
- All relevant travel and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed
Requirements and Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade 4)
- Maths (grade 4)
