Job Title: QHSE Manager
Reports to: General Manager
Hours Per Week: 37 (5 Day working week and 4 Day Working Week Options)
Location: Predominately at Nu-tech Engineering in Poole, occasional travel to Peter Day Precision in Christchurch
Purpose of the job:
To lead and continuously improve the Quality Management System (QMS) and Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) requirements, ensuring compliance with AS9100, ISO9001, customer requirements, statutory regulations and company objectives. The role is responsible for driving a culture of quality, continuous improvement, operational excellence and risk reduction throughout the organisation.
Main duties and responsibilities:
Quality Management
· Establish, maintain and improve all aspects of the Quality Management Systems in accordance with the relevant standards for the business unit (AS9100 at Peter Day & ISO9001 at Nu-tech)
· Lead the transition of Nu-tech from ISO9001 to AS9100 accreditation with support from management team
· Documented release of product in accordance with customer and company requirements in a timely manner
· Lead internal audit programme and identify areas for improvement and ensure timely closure of audit findings.
· Maintain, review and action as appropriate quality metrics as defined by the company
· Appropriate monthly and quarterly reporting on internal KPI’s
· Act as Management Representative for the Quality Management System and primary contact for certification bodies, customers and regulatory authorities.
· Ensure compliance with all aerospace, defence and customer quality requirements throughout the manufacturing process.
· Manage First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) in accordance with AS9102 requirements.
· Ensure effective control of documented information, quality records and revision status.
· Maintain control of monitoring and measuring equipment, including calibration systems and traceability requirements.
· Manage external certification audits, customer audits and supplier audits as required.
· Lead the Non-Conformance Reporting (NCR) process, ensuring effective containment, investigation and resolution of quality issues.
· Drive robust root cause analysis and corrective actions using recognised methodologies such as 8D, 5 Why and Fishbone Analysis.
· Monitor customer complaints, escapes, returns and concessions, ensuring prompt corrective action and prevention of recurrence.
· Establish, monitor and report key quality performance indicators including:
- Customer complaints
- On-time delivery support metrics
- Cost of poor quality
- Scrap and rework
- Internal and external non-conformances
- Audit performance
Supplier quality performance
· Conduct Management Review meetings and ensure actions are implemented and tracked to completion.
· Promote continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing and problem-solving techniques.
Supplier Quality
· Support supplier approval, monitoring and performance management activities.
· Conduct supplier quality reviews and audits where required.
· Work with suppliers to resolve quality issues and implement sustainable corrective actions.
Customer Quality
· Act as primary quality contact for customers.
· Support contract review activities to ensure customer quality requirements are fully understood and implemented.
· Build strong customer relationships through proactive communication and effective resolution of quality concerns.
Health, Safety & Environmental (In conjunction with Health and Safety Audit Contractor)
· Maintain and improve Health, Safety and Environmental systems to ensure compliance with current legislation and company policies.
· Ensure all risk assessments, COSHH assessments and safe systems of work are maintained and regularly reviewed.
· Lead accident, incident and near-miss investigations, implementing corrective and preventative actions.
· Ensure statutory inspections, training requirements and compliance obligations are maintained.
· Monitor HSE performance and report key metrics to senior management.
· Promote a positive safety culture throughout the business.
Leadership & Development
· Provide leadership, coaching and support to employees on quality and HSE matters.
· Deliver quality and HSE training throughout the organisation.
· Drive employee engagement in continuous improvement and problem-solving activities.
· Support business growth initiatives, new customer approvals and strategic improvement projects.
Key Skills & Experience
· Proven experience within a precision engineering, aerospace or advanced manufacturing environment.
· Strong working knowledge of AS9100 and ISO9001.
· Internal Auditor qualification and experience.
· Experience managing customer and certification audits.
· Strong understanding of CNC machining, inspection techniques and manufacturing processes.
· Experience with root cause analysis and continuous improvement methodologies.
· Excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills.
· Competent user of quality management and ERP systems.
