Full job description

The Bowl Inn is a 16th Century free house and B&B situated in the heart of the North Downs. We serve a traditional pub menu daily using the freshest locally sourced ingredients, as well as wood-fired pizzas from our specially built pizza kitchen, 'The Shed at The Bowl Inn'.

Overview

We are seeking a motivated and dedicated Assistant Chef to join our dynamic culinary team. This role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about food and cooking to develop their skills within a professional kitchen environment. The Assistant Chef will support the head chef in preparing high-quality dishes, ensuring smooth kitchen operations, and maintaining food safety standards. Previous kitchen or restaurant experience is preferred, but a strong enthusiasm for culinary arts and a willingness to learn are essential. This position provides valuable hands-on experience in meal preparation and food service, ideal for those aspiring to advance their culinary careers.

Responsibilities

Assist in preparing ingredients and cooking a variety of dishes according to established recipes and standards
Support the head chef with daily kitchen operations, including food plating and presentation
Prepare and cook wood-fired pizzas, for our restaurant as well as walk-in customers
Ensure all food safety and hygiene regulations are strictly followed during food preparation and handling
Help with meal assembly and serving to ensure timely delivery of orders
Maintain cleanliness of workstations, utensils, and kitchen equipment throughout shifts
Organise ingredients and supplies efficiently to optimise workflow
Support the team during busy periods by assisting with additional tasks as needed
Follow all health and safety procedures to create a safe working environment for staff and customers

Requirements

Previous experience in a kitchen, restaurant, or catering environment is desirable but not essential; enthusiasm to learn is key
We’re set in a rural location, so your own car or reliable alternative is required.
Knowledge of food preparation techniques and cooking methods
Understanding of food safety standards and hygiene practices
Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced environment
Good organisational skills with attention to detail
Flexibility to work shifts including evenings, weekends, or public holidays as required
A positive attitude, strong work ethic, and team-oriented mindset
