The Role: Sales Engineer(Pumps & Valves)
As a Sales Engineer, you will play a key role in driving business growth across our pump and valve service, repair, and installation activities.
You will be responsible for identifying new business opportunities, managing existing accounts, and providing technical and commercial solutions that meet customer needs. This role requires someone who is confident both in front of customers and when working with technical engineering information.
You will act as a vital link between customers, engineers, workshop teams, and company directors, ensuring that all work is clearly scoped, accurately quoted, and successfully delivered.
The role requires a proactive mindset, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and opportunities simultaneously.
Key ResponsibilitiesBusiness Development & Sales Growth
- Identify, develop, and secure new business opportunities within industrial pumps, valves, and mechanical engineering sectors
- Build long-term relationships with new and existing customers
- Proactively follow up on leads and enquiries to generate sales opportunities
- Promote company services across industrial, utilities, drainage, and manufacturing markets
- Develop a strong understanding of customer operations to identify ongoing opportunities
Customer Engagement & Site Work
- Conduct regular site visits to assess customer requirements and operational challenges
- Carry out surveys and inspections of pump systems, pipework, and associated equipment
- Engage directly with clients on site to understand technical and operational needs
- Provide practical, solution-based recommendations
- Represent the company professionally at all times when working on customer premises
Technical Sales & Solution Development
- Prepare accurate and detailed quotations for repair, refurbishment, upgrade, and installation works
- Interpret technical drawings, specifications, and tender documentation
- Define project scope, labour requirements, materials, and timescales
- Develop cost effective engineering solutions tailored to customer requirements
- Work closely with engineering and workshop teams to ensure technical accuracy
Negotiation & Closing Sales
- Manage commercial discussions with customers
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and project scope
- Convert quotations into confirmed orders
- Maintain a strong focus on achieving sales targets and growth objectives
- Ensure all sales opportunities are followed through effectively
Technical Support & Engineering Input
- Provide expert advice on pump selection, performance, efficiency, and system operation
- Assist customers with troubleshooting and operational issues
- Support failure analysis and recommend corrective actions
- Liaise with engineers to ensure correct technical understanding of jobs
Internal Coordination
- Act as the communication link between customers, engineers, workshop teams, and management
- Ensure clear handover of job requirements from sales to operations
- Support planning and scheduling of works where required
- Maintain smooth project flow from enquiry through to completion
Administration & CRM Management
- Maintain accurate CRM records and sales pipeline updates
- Track quotations, opportunities, and customer interactions
- Provide regular reporting on sales activity and forecasts
- Ensure documentation is accurate, organised, and up to date
Marketing & Industry Representation
- Support trade shows, exhibitions, and networking events
- Represent the company at industry functions where required
- Assist with promotional and marketing activities
- Contribute ideas to support business development and growth
What We Are Looking For
We are seeking a candidate who combines technical engineering knowledge with strong commercial awareness and excellent communication skills.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience in pump sales, pump servicing, or industrial engineering sales
- Experience working in industrial, manufacturing, utilities, drainage, or similar sectors
- Confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to explain technical information in a clear and customer-focused manner
- Strong negotiation and closing ability
- Self-motivated with excellent organisation and time management skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and CRM systems
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable Qualifications
We welcome applicants with formal engineering qualifications such as:
- Engineering Degree (Mechanical or related discipline)
- HNC (Higher National Certificate) in Engineering
- HND (Higher National Diploma) in Engineering
- Or equivalent practical industry experience
- CDM (advantagous)
Additional Desirable Experience
- Background in mechanical maintenance or engineering services
- Familiarity with tendering and contract negotiation processes
- Previous field-based technical sales experience
- Understanding of electrical or control systems linked to pump applications
