Full job description

Job Purpose

As the clinical lead you will lead the clinical team within the nursing home, ensuring the delivery of exceptional, person-centred care to all residents. The Clinical Lead oversees care plans, medication management, and clinical compliance, acting as the clinical expert on the floor. This role splits time between direct nursing care, staff mentorship, and quality assurance auditing to maintain high regulatory standards.

1. Resident Care & Clinical Excellence

Person-centred care: Oversee the creation, implementation, and regular review of detailed, resident-focused care plans.
Clinical oversight: Manage complex care needs, including tissue viability, wound care, nutrition, hydration, and end-of-life (palliative) care.
Dementia care: Ensure best-practice interventions are used for residents living with dementia or cognitive decline.
Medication management: Supervise the safe storage, administration, and auditing of all medicines and controlled drugs.
GP & family liaison: Lead communication with visiting GPs, social workers, speech therapists, and residents' families

2. Team Leadership & Staff Development

Shift leadership: Set clear daily priorities for the nursing and care team, ensuring safe staffing ratios and skill mixes.
Supervision & appraisal: Conduct regular clinical supervisions, competencies checks, and annual performance reviews for staff.
Mentorship: Support newly recruited nurses and care assistants through their induction and preceptorship programmes.
Absence cover: Take charge of the home's clinical operations in the absence of the Home Manager.

3. Governance, Auditing & Compliance

Regulatory standards: Ensure the home meets or exceeds all regulatory standards (e.g., CQC "Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, Well-led" domains).
Clinical audits: Conduct regular audits on falls, weight loss, pressure ulcers, infection control, and care documentation.
Risk management: Assess and mitigate clinical risks, ensuring all safeguarding incidents are reported instantly to local authorities.
Incident investigation: Review accidents or near-misses on shifts, implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence

Person Specification: Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications

Valid professional nursing registration (e.g., NMC PIN as an RGN or RMN)
Evidence of continuous professional development

Experience

Proven post-registration nursing experience within an elderly care or nursing home setting
Experience leading a shift or managing a clinical team

Knowledge

In-depth knowledge of age-related conditions, dementia, and palliative care
Strong understanding of Safeguarding, DoLS (Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards), and MCA (Mental Capacity Act)

Core Competencies & Skills

Clinical Judgment: Ability to spot subtle changes in a resident’s physical or mental health and intervene early.
Empathy & Patience: Deep commitment to treating elderly residents with dignity, respect, and kindness.
Clear Communication: Ability to translate complex clinical data into simple updates for families and non-clinical care staff.
Crisis Management: Calm under pressure when handling clinical emergencies or sudden outbreaks (e.g., norovirus or flu)
