Full job description

About the Role

We are looking for a reliable, organised and detail-focused Bookkeeper / Accountant to join our busy car dealership.

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, processing day-to-day transactions and supporting the management team with financial administration and reporting.

This is an important role within the dealership and requires someone who is trustworthy, highly organised and comfortable working with numbers, accounts and confidential financial information.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records.
Record and process sales, purchases, expenses and other financial transactions.
Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable.
Process supplier invoices and arrange payments.
Monitor customer payments and outstanding balances.
Reconcile bank accounts and credit card transactions.
Maintain accurate records of vehicle purchases and sales.
Record vehicle-related expenses and associated costs.
Assist with monthly management accounts and financial reporting.
Prepare and maintain VAT records and assist with VAT returns.
Assist with purchase ledger and sales ledger administration.
Investigate and resolve discrepancies in financial records.
Maintain organised digital and physical accounting records.
Assist with year-end accounts and provide information to external accountants.
Ensure financial documentation is complete, accurate and properly filed.
Monitor cash flow and highlight any financial issues to management.
Provide general financial and administrative support to the dealership.
Carry out other accounting and bookkeeping duties as required.

About You

We are looking for someone who is:

Experienced in bookkeeping, accounting or a similar financial role.
Highly organised with excellent attention to detail.
Confident working with numbers and financial information.
Reliable, trustworthy and able to handle confidential information.
Comfortable working independently and managing deadlines.
Confident using accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
A good communicator who can work effectively with management, suppliers and customers.
Able to identify errors and discrepancies and resolve them efficiently.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced automotive/dealership environment.

Previous experience working within a car dealership or automotive industry would be an advantage. Experience with vehicle sales, stock accounting or dealership accounting systems would be particularly beneficial.

Qualifications & Experience

Previous bookkeeping or accounting experience required.
AAT qualification or equivalent accounting experience is desirable.
Experience with accounting software such as Xero, Sage, QuickBooks or similar is an advantage.
Good knowledge of Excel and Microsoft Office.
Understanding of VAT and general UK accounting procedures.
Experience preparing accounts or working with an external accountant is desirable.
