We are seeking a motivated Telecoms Project Engineer to join our team as a Project Engineer [Telecoms], supporting the delivery of key railway projects across the STEP (Signalling Telecoms & E&P) organisation.
We are seeking an individual who thrives in a collaborative team environment and can communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. You will play a key role in delivering large and complex rail projects.
The successful candidate will lead the Telecoms discipline within projects, ensuring compliance with legislation, Railway Group Standards, and Network Rail standards. You will manage engineering aspects of design and construction, ensuring the use of competent resources and driving safe, efficient, and compliant project delivery.
The portfolio includes multi-disciplinary projects of varying scale, complexity and PACE stages, with telecoms engineering activities involving both operational comms and station information and security systems (SISS) in support of Signalling, Telecoms and E&P infrastructure.
Alongside your responsibilities as Project Engineer [Telecoms], you will also have opportunity to utilise your experience by undertaking the Designated Project Engineer (DPE) role where appropriate.
Package : This role sits within Band 4C, Zone 1.
Location : The successful candidate can be based in either Birmingham Baskerville House or Manchester Square One

What you'll be doing :
You'll ensure all engineering and project activities are delivered safely on time and within budget, while meeting Network Rail standards, legislation and environmental expectations. The role involves managing design and construction from specification through to testing and commissioning, overseeing contractors and consultants, and making sure everyone involved is competent and working to the right standards. You'll apply effective risk and HAZOP assessments, monitor quality and compliance through reviews and audits, and provide practical project management guidance across site activities. Acting as Designated Project Engineer where required, you'll also build strong relationships with stakeholders and regulators, while sharing best practice to continuously improve delivery across projects.
What you'll have:
- Relevant experience in [Telecoms] engineering, ideally within both Operational Comms and SISS with involvement in construction and design projects across multi discipline areas
- Engineering technical qualifications to HNC/HND or equivalent GNVQ level
- Knowledge of quality assurance
- An understanding of the arrangements required for the independent assessment of work
- CDM, risk assessment, engineering management competency
We would also like but it isn't crucial to have/to be:
- Membership of a relevant professional body with chartered status and/or educated to degree level
- Knowledge of structuring safety cases in support of projects
- An appreciation of environmental issues in engineering works
- Six Sigma Yellow Belt
- Project safety management experience
- Yellow book course
