The UK's housing stock is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in the country, and fixing it requires people who understand buildings, care about the outcome, and are willing to get stuck in on site. We're looking for a Trainee or Junior Energy Assessor to join our team and be part of that work - improving homes, reducing emissions, and contributing to the UK's journey to net zero.
We are a small but growing, award-winning sustainability consultancy based at Paintworks, Bristol. We deliver retrofit, testing, and consultancy services across the UK, helping clients meet PAS 2035 and other sustainability standards.
This is a site-based role that will often involve overnight stays Monday to Friday across the UK. Applicants must be comfortable with regular travel and staying away from home during the week.
You'll begin by training as an air tightness tester, carrying out compliance testing on new build sites across the UK. From there, you'll gain experience in Domestic Energy Assessments (EPCs), ventilation testing, cavity wall inspections, and retrofit assessments. Accuracy, consistency, and attention to detail are essential - high-quality assessments form the foundation for retrofit and decarbonisation projects.
As you develop in the role, you'll be cross-trained in complementary services, providing a clear path for professional growth within the company.
Key Duties
- Carry out air tightness testing and other compliance testing on new build sites
- Carry out Domestic Energy Assessments (EPCs) on a range of residential properties
- Conduct ventilation testing, cavity wall inspections, and assist with retrofit assessments
- Collect accurate data on building fabric, services, and occupancy
- Upload and maintain high-quality assessment data and evidence in our systems
- Travel across the UK, with regular overnight stays Monday–Friday
- Collaborate with Retrofit, Testing, and Coordination teams to ensure information is accurate
- Engage with residents and clients professionally and respectfully
- Identify potential risks or anomalies during assessments and report them appropriately
- Keep up to date with industry guidance, tools, and assessment best practice
- Provide flexible support to other parts of the business as needed
Training & Progression
You will begin with a period of training in Airtightness Testing (ATTMA L1). As you progress, you'll be further trained and supported in:
- Domestic Energy Assessment (DEA / EPC)
- Retrofit Assessment (PAS 2035)
- Ventilation Testing (Part F)
- Borescope / cavity wall inspections
Key Skills & Experience
- Experience working on building sites desirable
- A background in sustainability, building, or construction is advantageous.
- Experience in DEA or Retrofit more broadly is a bonus but not required - full training will be provided for the right candidate
- An interest in or understanding of building technologies and low-carbon systems - heat pumps, solar PV, MVHR, insulation, building fabric - is highly desirable
- Degree or relevant qualification in building, sustainability, or environmental discipline desirable
- Strong analytical and data-collection skills
- Excellent attention to detail and methodical approach
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Flexible and comfortable with regular travel and overnight stays across the UK
- Ability to work independently while maintaining accuracy
- Experience using RdSAP or energy assessment software is desirable but not essential
About You
- Genuinely motivated by sustainability and tackling climate change - this matters to us, and we want it to matter to you
