Portishead Open Air Pool is a much-loved, charity-run heated outdoor pool with beautiful views across the Severn Estuary. We’re run by a small, friendly team and supported by volunteers, welcoming over 50,000 swimmers a year.
After a major refurbishment we are building our Pool Duty Manager team for the 2026 season and beyond and are looking for people who enjoy leading others, like being outdoors and care about running a safe, welcoming community space.
The role
As a Pool Duty Manager, you’ll be a visible, responsible presence on poolside, helping everything run smoothly and safely. You’ll support lifeguards, deal with the day-to-day running of the site and help make sure swimmers have a great experience — whether it’s a quiet morning swim or a busy event.
No two days are the same.
What you’ll be doing
- Looking after swimmer safety during sessions and events
- Opening and closing the site, including pool covers, safety equipment and security
- Supporting and supervising lifeguards, including rotas, checks and training
- Following normal operating and emergency procedures
- Helping monitor water quality, heating and plant systems
- Overseeing tills, card payments and end-of-day cashing up
- Keeping the site clean, tidy and well looked after
- Helping with events such as film nights, splash sessions and galas
About you
- At least 12 months’ experience as a lifeguard
- Current NPLQ qualification
· Experience working as part of a pool or events team
· Good at talking with people of all ages
- Happy to work outdoors in all weathers on a rota, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays
Pool Plant Operator or RLSS Trainer Assessor qualifications are a bonus but not essential.

Contract options
- We’re recruiting two to three core Pool Duty Managers on permanent contracts, working at least three days a week
- We’ll also offer zero-hour Duty Manager roles for people looking for more flexible work, especially weekends and school holidays
