Senior Materials Technician – South West England
Job Overview
Due to a significant workload increase, we are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Materials Testing Technician to lead and support our projects in the South West Region. This role combines site and laboratory responsibilities, with the majority of activity focused on project delivery across the region. Prior experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory’s is advantageous, however we can provide comprehensive training for the right candidate. The position will be based regionally in the South West, with travel throughout the area and occasional UK-wide site work as required. This is a full time permanent position Monday to Friday.
The successful candidate must be self-motivated, hardworking, and have a hands-on approach. A flexible work ethic is essential to support the needs of the business. You will need effective communication, problem-solving, and IT skills. You will interact with customers and colleagues at various levels, so you should work confidently and courteously both in a team and on your own initiative. You will be required to keep accurate, legible records of all work undertaken and operate within documented QA/QC systems in line with UKAS accreditation.
Duties include:
- Lead testing of a range of construction materials to project specifications
- Conduct site sampling and supervise on-site material collection for laboratory testing
- Complete test sheets and calculations; review and approve test results
- Coordinate with senior staff on work schedules and resource allocation
- Ensure adherence to in-house QA systems and UKAS requirements
- Maintain high standards of health and safety in line with company policy
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior technicians on site and in the lab
- Liaise with clients, contractors, and internal teams to support project delivery and reporting
Essential Skills / Competencies
- Minimum GCSE/Grade 4/C in English and Maths or equivalent; relevant higher-level qualifications welcome
- Knowledge of UKAS accredited laboratory practices is beneficial
- Prior experience with site and laboratory testing of concrete, soils, and aggregates is advantageous
- Strong communication skills and client-facing experience
- Proficiency in documentation, data recording, and basic statistical calculations
- Ability to lead, supervise, and train junior staff; capable of working both independently and as part of a team
- Flexible travel within the South West region; willingness to work on-site and away from home when required
