We are looking for an experienced Asphalt Roller Driver/Roller Operator to join our surfacing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out the compaction of asphalt materials on roads, footways, car parks, industrial sites and public realm projects.
The role requires someone who understands asphalt compaction, rolling patterns, joint treatment, surface finish and working safely around a live surfacing operation.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Asphalt Roller Driver will be expected to:
- Operate asphalt rollers safely and efficiently during surfacing works.
- Compact base, binder and surface course materials to the required standard.
- Work closely with the paver driver, rake hands, screwman and foreman to achieve the correct finish.
- Follow agreed rolling patterns and compaction methods for different materials and site conditions.
- Monitor material temperature and ensure compaction is carried out within the correct working window.
- Identify and avoid over-rolling, roller marks, cracking, shoving or displacement of material.
- Roll longitudinal joints, transverse joints, edges, tie-ins, ironwork and confined areas correctly.
- Use vibrating and static rolling methods appropriately depending on material, thickness and location.
- Assist with achieving line, level, texture and surface regularity requirements.
- Carry out daily plant checks and report any defects immediately.
- Keep the roller clean and maintained to a good working standard.
- Work safely around operatives, pavers, delivery wagons, pedestrians and traffic management.
- Assist the surfacing squad with general duties when not operating the roller.
- Follow company health, safety, environmental and quality procedures at all times.
Skills and Experience Required
The ideal candidate should have:
- Previous experience operating asphalt rollers on road surfacing works.
- Good understanding of asphalt compaction and surfacing operations.
- Experience working with base course, binder course and surface course materials.
- Ability to produce a clean, consistent finish without roller marks.
- Awareness of material temperature, compaction timing and rolling sequences.
- Ability to work as part of a surfacing gang in a fast-paced environment.
- Good communication with the foreman, paver driver and hand-lay team.
- Strong awareness of health and safety when working around plant and people.
- Flexibility to work dayshift, nightshift, weekends and overtime when required.
Tickets / Qualifications Desirable
- CPCS or NPORS Roller ticket.
- CSCS card.
- Streetworks qualification.
- CAT & Genny training.
- Manual handling.
- Abrasive wheels.
- First aid.
- Full UK driving licence preferred.
