Recovery Truck Driver (3.5T Truck & Trailer)
Job Overview
We are seeking a reliable and professional Recovery Truck Driver to operate a 3.5-tonne recovery truck and trailer, providing vehicle recovery, transportation, and roadside assistance services. The successful candidate will be responsible for safely loading, securing, transporting, and unloading vehicles while delivering excellent customer service.
This role requires strong driving skills, mechanical awareness, and the ability to remain calm and professional in breakdown or accident situations.
Key Responsibilities
Driving & Vehicle Recovery
- Operate a 3.5T recovery truck and trailer in a safe, legal, and professional manner
- Recover broken-down, damaged, or accident vehicles from roadsides, private properties, and accident scenes
- Load and unload vehicles using winches, skates, dollies, straps, and other recovery equipment
- Secure vehicles correctly to ensure safe transport and prevent damage
- Transport vehicles to garages, body shops, storage yards, or customer-specified locations
Safety & Compliance
- Comply with all road traffic laws, company policies, and health & safety procedures
- Carry out daily vehicle checks (oil, tyres, lights, winch, straps, trailer coupling, etc.)
- Ensure the recovery truck, trailer, and equipment are kept clean, roadworthy, and well-maintained
- Complete all required paperwork, job sheets, and digital records accurately
Customer Service
- Provide a calm, courteous, and professional service to customers, often in stressful situations
- Explain recovery procedures clearly and reassure customers when needed
- Represent the company positively at all times
Communication & Coordination
- Communicate effectively with dispatch/control regarding job status and location
- Use GPS, mobile apps, or radios as required
- Report vehicle defects, incidents, or delays promptly
Required Skills & Experience
- Valid UK driving licence (Category B – experience with towing essential)
- Proven experience driving 3.5T vehicles and towing trailers
- Good understanding of load securing and weight distribution
- Basic mechanical knowledge (diagnosing simple faults is an advantage)
- Strong awareness of road safety and hazard management
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure
Desirable (but not essential)
- Previous experience in vehicle recovery, roadside assistance, or breakdown services
- Knowledge of accident recovery procedures
- Familiarity with winches, wheel skates, dollies, and recovery equipment
- Customer service or public-facing experience
