Potteries Heavy Haulage Ltd is a well-established family-run transport and heavy haulage company based in Stoke-on-Trent. We operate and maintain our own fleet of HGV tractor units, specialist trailers, works vans and forklifts, delivering a professional service to customers throughout the UK.
We are looking to recruit an experienced HGV Mechanic / Commercial Vehicle Technician to join our team. The role will report to the workshop manager.
The Role
This is a predominantly workshop-based role, with approximately 90-95% of work carried out from our Stoke-on-Trent premises. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, repair and inspection of our fleet and equipment, ensuring all vehicles remain safe, compliant and operational.
The role will occasionally involve attending roadside breakdowns, assisting company drivers with mechanical issues and carrying out repairs at customer sites when required, although this is not a regular part of the position.
A company van will be provided for work-related duties.

Key Responsibilities
- Service, maintain and repair HGV tractor units.
- Service, maintain and repair a range of trailers, including specialist heavy haulage equipment.
- Service, maintain and repair company works vans and light commercial vehicles.
- Service and maintain forklifts and yard equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic faults.
- Carry out preventative maintenance inspections and scheduled servicing.
- Complete safety inspections in line with DVSA and Operator Licence requirements.
- Prepare vehicles and trailers for annual MOT tests.
- Present vehicles and trailers for MOT testing and complete any required rectification work.
- Carry out brake testing and maintain brake test records.
- Maintain accurate workshop and maintenance documentation.
- Carry out repairs and maintenance work on external customer trailers as required.
- Provide occasional roadside assistance and breakdown support for company drivers.
- Liaise with drivers and management regarding defects and repair requirements.
- Assist with parts ordering
- Carry out welding and fabrication repairs where competent.
- Maintain high standards of workshop cleanliness and general housekeeping.
- Ensure all work is carried out safely and to a high standard.
- Help maximise fleet availability and minimise vehicle downtime.
- Comply with company health and safety procedures at all times.
Requirements
Essential
- Previous experience as an HGV Mechanic, HGV Technician or Commercial Vehicle Technician.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Good understanding of HGV and trailer maintenance.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Good attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Desirable
- HGV Class 1 (CE) Licence.
- Experience with trailer repairs and maintenance.
- Forklift or plant maintenance experience.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- IRTEC qualification.
- Knowledge of DVSA maintenance and compliance requirements.
