SML Geoscience provides specialist ground investigation services nationwide, including subsidence investigations for the UK insurance sector. Due to continued growth, we are expanding our subsidence team covering the East of England.
The Role
We are seeking a Ground Investigation Technician / Driller to join our growing subsidence team. This role offers the opportunity to build on existing experience within a specialist area of ground investigation, primarily focused on residential and insurance-related work.
Working as part of a small field team, you will carry out a range of intrusive ground investigation works and contribute to project delivery from site setup through to completion.
The position is ideally suited to someone with hands-on ground investigation experience, although we are open to training motivated individuals with a background in construction or utilities who are looking to develop a long-term career in the sector.
The role also provides exposure to a wider range of services offered by the Geoscience division, including ground investigation for construction projects, building surveying, and structural or drainage-related works.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out intrusive ground investigations as part of a site team
- Operate drilling rigs including tracked and handheld window sampling equipment
- Undertake in-situ testing including shear vane, penetrometer, and Macintosh probe
- Log soils, collect samples, and ensure accurate recording of ground conditions and sampling data
- Manage sample handling and site logistics
- Assist with CCTV drainage surveys
- Set up and prepare sites for drilling activities safely and efficiently
- Reinstate surfaces to client requirements
- Carry out routine maintenance of plant and equipment
- Share driving responsibilities
- Liaise with property owners, loss adjusters, and other stakeholders
- Follow health and safety procedures at all times

About You
We are looking for a practical and reliable individual with a strong work ethic. You should be comfortable working outdoors, as part of a team, and taking responsibility for delivering high-quality work on site.
The role involves regular interaction with policyholders and other stakeholders, so a professional and courteous approach is essential.
Candidates with previous experience in ground investigation or drilling are encouraged to apply, although full training can be provided for the right individual.
Essential Requirements
- Strong work ethic and ability to follow instructions
- Physically fit and comfortable with manual outdoor work
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to safe working practices
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Basic mechanical aptitude and confidence working with plant and equipment
- Confident and professional when interacting with clients
- Full UK manual driving licence
- Willingness to share driving of company vehicles (including large vans)
Desirable (but not essential)
- Experience with window sampling, dynamic sampling, or similar techniques
- Previous ground investigation, construction, or utilities experience
- Interest in geology, geography, construction, or environmental work
Additional Information
- Work is primarily located across the East of England and into North London
- Early starts are typical (around 7am), with most days lasting approximately 6–8 hours door-to-door
- Salary is based on a 50-hour working week, including travel time
- Overtime is generally unpaid, although there may be opportunities for weekend work
