About Midsummer Energy
Midsummer is one of the UK's leading wholesale distributors of renewable energy systems, supplying solar PV, battery storage, EV charging, off-grid and renewable heat products to a nationwide network of installers. The business started life in the front room of a narrowboat and has since grown through five warehouses and into a subsidiary in Ireland, with sites now in Cambridge and Glasgow. Midsummer has been voted the UK's best renewables distributor and named among Cambridgeshire's top 100 privately-owned companies - but has kept the friendly, informal, get-stuck-in culture it started with, along with a genuine passion for the environment.
The Role
We're looking for a confident, hands-on Late Shift Manager to take charge of our Coldhams warehouse for the second half of the day. Once the day team clocks off, you'll be the senior person on site - keeping outbound and inbound moving, keeping the team safe, trained and supported, and making sure the warehouse is cleaned down, secured and ready for a 6am start the following morning.
Key Responsibilities
Running the Late Shift
- Act as the senior point of contact and shift lead for all warehouse staff on the late shift, prioritising and delegating tasks as needed.
- Take ownership of late shift staffing, making sure the warehouse is fully covered through to close.
- Manage late shift communications - handing over clearly to the day team and Warehouse/Operations Manager on outstanding issues, stock queries or urgent orders, and keeping relevant systems and logs updated.
- Act as the main escalation point for any issues that come up once warehouse management have left for the day.
Outbound & Inbound
- Oversee outbound processing, making sure the day's orders are picked, checked, packed and booked on for dispatch before close.
- Manage inbound deliveries - unloading, checking and putting away stock, and replenishing picking faces and racking ready for the next day.
- Prepare and load our own outbound lorry shipments ready for departure.
- Make sure early-shift fleet vehicles and courier collections are fully loaded, checked and ready to go out from 6am the following morning.
Close of Day
- Finish off any outstanding tasks from the day and chase down loose ends before handover.
- Carry out a full clean-down of the warehouse at the end of the shift, leaving it safe, tidy and ready for the morning team.
- Act as keyholder - securely close up and lock down the site at the end of the shift, including setting alarms.
- Flag any equipment faults, damage or maintenance issues from the day for follow-up.
Health & Safety
- Make sure all late shift staff work within Midsummer's health and safety policies and procedures at all times.
- Address unsafe practices immediately, escalating to the Warehouse Manager or Operations Manager where necessary.
- Take on relevant site safety responsibilities as required, such as Fire Warden, Person Responsible for Racking Safety, or Banksman duties.
- Report and log any accidents, near-misses or incidents that happen during the shift.
People & Training
- Deliver on-the-job training and coaching to new and existing team members, leading by example on quality, pace and safety.
- Monitor staff performance and wellbeing during the shift, offering informal feedback and flagging any concerns to the Warehouse Manager.
- Support with hiring and onboarding, including running trial shifts for late shift candidates.
HR & Administration
- Support the Warehouse Manager and HR team with absence management, including conducting absence review/return-to-work meetings and issuing related letters.
- Assist with day-to-day HR administration for the late shift team, including supporting disciplinary, grievance and performance review processes in line with Midsummer's policies.
- Keep accurate records of shift handovers, incidents and staffing issues for the Warehouse Manager.
About You
- Previous experience leading or supervising a warehouse or logistics team, ideally on a late or evening shift.
- A valid counterbalance forklift licence - preferred but not essential, training can be provided.
- A practical, hands-on approach - happy to get stuck into picking, packing and loading alongside the team.
- Comfortable managing health & safety and confident raising and resolving issues as they arise.
- Good communicator - you'll be the main link between the late shift, the day team and warehouse management.
- Calm under pressure and comfortable being the senior person on site with reduced supervision.
- Reliable and energetic, and keen to help the business grow and improve.
