Full job description

We are seeking a talented Computational Scientist to join The Innovation Game. We are a Cambridge-based startup building a market-based framework for accelerating the discovery of valuable algorithms. TIG’s mission is to create a sustainable ecosystem for open algorithmic innovation.

We focus on computational problems that are difficult to solve but easy to verify, allowing researchers, developers, and automated discovery systems to compete on improving algorithmic performance across important scientific and industrial domains.

About the Role: You'll play a key role in identifying and developing computational problems that are difficult to solve but easy to verify - a cornerstone of our framework. These problems are drawn from various scientific fields. You will also be involved in TIG’s automated research efforts, using tools such as OpenEvolve, SkyDiscover, and related systems to help automate the discovery of improved algorithms. You should have a passion for scientific research and innovation, strong problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities:

- Collaborate with scientists in academia and industry to identify suitable computational problems across diverse scientific domains.

- Implement and optimise scientific algorithms, writing code to precisely define problems, generate random instances of variable difficulty, and formulate solutions based on published literature and your expertise.

- Use automated discovery systems, such as OpenEvolve and SkyDiscover, to search for improved algorithms.

- Contribute to the development and refinement of TIG's framework and processes.

Qualifications:

- PhD preferred; minimum of an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject (e.g., Computer Science, Mathematics, ML, Physics, Chemistry, Computational Biology).

- Must have coding experience. - Solid background in mathematical and/or computational sciences.

- Ability to communicate clearly on technical matters.

- Comfortable using AI tools.

- Verbal and written English language fluency.

- Ability to quickly learn and understand new scientific concepts across diverse fields.
