About Us
We are a specialist education recruitment agency connecting skilled tutors with pupils, families, and schools across Cumbria. We place tutors across a wide variety of settings — from private homes and community venues to primary and secondary schools throughout the county — ensuring every learner gets the expert, personalised support they need.
The Role
We are looking for a passionate and knowledgeable Science Tutor to join our agency. You will deliver tailored one-to-one or small group tuition in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or combined Science, to pupils ranging from primary age through to GCSE, A-Level, and beyond, depending on your specialist expertise and availability.
Sessions may be delivered in person — including at pupils' private homes, schools, or other agreed venues across Cumbria — or remotely via online platforms. Flexibility and professionalism are key, as you will be representing our agency directly with families and schools.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging, personalised Science tuition sessions tailored to each pupil's age, ability, and learning goals
- Assess pupils' current levels of understanding and identify gaps in knowledge across Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or combined Science
- Set and mark homework, practice questions, and mock assessments to track progress
- Prepare pupils for specific examinations including SATs, GCSEs, and A-Level Sciences
- Help pupils develop scientific thinking, practical understanding, and exam technique
- Communicate clearly and regularly with parents, carers, and schools regarding pupil progress
- Adapt your teaching style and resources to suit a range of learning needs, including SEND
- Maintain accurate session records and provide progress reports when required
- Conduct all sessions in a safe, professional, and appropriate manner, whether in person or online
- Represent the agency professionally at all times when working in private homes or school settings
Requirements
- Strong subject knowledge in at least one Science discipline (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), with combined Science knowledge an advantage
- Proven experience tutoring or teaching Science to pupils of varying ages and abilities
- Confidence delivering sessions both in person and via online platforms (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet)
- Excellent communication skills with pupils, parents, and school staff
- A self-motivated, reliable, and organised approach to work
- Ability to adapt to different learning environments, from family homes to classroom settings
- A professional and approachable manner at all times
- Access to your own transport (desirable, given the varied locations across Cumbria)
Qualifications
- A degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or a related Science subject (desirable)
- A teaching qualification (QTS, PGCE, or equivalent) is an advantage but not essential
- A-Level Science in the relevant subject(s) as a minimum
- Specialist knowledge across multiple Science disciplines is a strong advantage
DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service)
An enhanced DBS check is required for this role, given that tuition may take place in private homes and schools. If you do not currently hold an enhanced DBS on the Update Service, you must be willing to apply for one as part of your registration with us. We will support you through the process — this is a non-negotiable requirement to ensure the safety of all pupils in our care.
Why Register With Us?
- Competitive hourly rates reflecting your subject expertise and experience
- Fully flexible working — you choose your availability and preferred settings
- Placements to suit you, whether you prefer online sessions, school-based work, or home visits
- Dedicated consultant to match you with the right pupils and families
- Work across a varied and interesting mix of settings throughout Cumbria
- Opportunity to build a consistent client base through the agency
