Senior Civil Engineer - Belfast

We are seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to join their expanding Civil Engineering team in Northern Ireland, supporting a growing workload of infrastructure and development-led projects across residential, commercial and industrial sectors.
This role involves leading and managing the Civil Engineering aspects of feasibility, appraisal, planning, detailed design and technical approvals, from concept through to construction support. You will play a key role in delivering technically robust and planning-sensitive engineering solutions whilst contributing to the continued growth and success of our regional business.

You will work closely with the Associate Director and Office Lead, supporting both public and private sector clients and helping to shape the built environment across Northern Ireland and, occasionally, the Republic of Ireland.

Project Focus
You will contribute to and lead projects involving:
- Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) and Drainage Assessments (DAs)
- Waste Water Impact Assessments (WWIAs)
- Stormwater offsetting and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS)
- Consent to Discharge applications (Article 161)
- Pre-planning advice and planning condition discharge
- Private Street Determinations and road adoptions under NI legislation
- Highways and drainage design for residential, commercial and industrial developments
- Surface water and foul water drainage systems (private and adoptable)
- External works design, levels strategies and cut-and-fill assessments
- Culverted watercourse diversions and watercourse infrastructure
- Technical approval submissions and statutory approvals
- Feasibility studies including drainage and highways assessments
- Liaison with statutory bodies including NI Water, DfI Roads, Rivers Agency and local authorities
- Flood modelling coordination with specialist in-house teams where required
Main Duties
- Lead Civil Engineering design from feasibility and pre-planning stages through to detailed design and construction support
- Prepare and review reports, drawings, calculations and supporting documentation
- Manage and deliver statutory approvals including Private Street Determination and Article 161 submissions
- Produce detailed designs and calculations for highways and drainage infrastructure
- Prepare 3D ground models and undertake cut-and-fill analysis, volume calculations and vertical alignment design using Civil 3D
- Coordinate with planning consultants, architects, clients and external agencies throughout project lifecycles
- Represent the business at client meetings, planning consultations, design workshops and stakeholder events
- Undertake site inspections where required
- Manage project programmes and monitor delivery against agreed timescales
- Ensure designs are coordinated across all disciplines
- Mentor and support junior engineers and contribute to wider team development
- Exercise due care and diligence in all aspects of engineering design and detailing
- Produce scope variations and identify additional fee opportunities where appropriate
- Support fee proposals and bid submissions
- Assist in maintaining and developing client relationships and identifying follow-on opportunities
Training and Development
- Ideally chartered or actively progressing toward Chartered status
- Encouraged to continue professional development through internal and external training, seminars and professional institution events

Education and Experience
- BEng/BSc or MEng/MSc in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, however, applicants with HND/C or significant relevant experience also welcomed.
- Chartered or working towards Chartered status (ICE / Engineers Ireland)
- Consultancy experience delivering infrastructure and development-led projects
- Strong understanding of planning processes and technical approvals
- Knowledge of Northern Ireland planning policy, DfI Roads standards and NI Water requirements desirable
- Experience of NI-specific approvals including Article 161 and Private Street Determinations advantageous
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel as required
Technical Skills
Essential:
- Experience preparing FRAs, SuDS strategies and pre-planning assessments
- Working experience of drainage and highway design
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D
- Experience using MicroDrainage, or Causeway Flow
- Ability to produce drainage calculations and infrastructure strategies
- Working knowledge of industry guidance and relevant standards
- Experience liaising with local authorities and statutory consultees
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software
Desirable:
- Experience with TUFLOW or HEC-RAS
- Experience supporting hydraulic or river modelling studies
- Understanding of BIM coordination and collaborative workflows
- Working appreciation of highway and general structures
