At Best Lives, we are committed to supporting people to live fulfilling and meaningful lives. We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Payroll Specialist (Standalone) to join our People Team and take responsibility for the accurate and efficient coordination of our payroll function.
The Role
As Payroll Specialist (Standalone), you will take ownership of the day-to-day coordination of payroll activities managed by our external payroll provider. You will be responsible for ensuring payroll information is accurate, complete and submitted within strict deadlines, while maintaining compliance with statutory and contractual requirements.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional who is confident working independently, has strong attention to detail and enjoys taking ownership of payroll processes and continuous improvement.
You will act as the key point of contact for payroll within the organisation, working closely with the People Team, managers, employees and our external payroll provider.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the organisation's payroll function and act as the main internal payroll specialist.
- Coordinate weekly and four-weekly payroll submissions across multiple locations.
- Ensure payroll data is accurate, complete and submitted within agreed timescales.
- Act as the primary liaison between Best Lives and our outsourced payroll provider.
- Review payroll information and resolve discrepancies or queries promptly.
- Process payroll adjustments, advances and payments outside standard payroll runs.
- Manage employee payroll queries and provide accurate and timely responses.
- Complete year-end payroll activities and support statutory submissions to HMRC and pension providers.
- Produce payroll reports and management information as required.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure payroll documentation is appropriately managed.
- Keep up to date with changes to UK payroll legislation and statutory requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, systems and procedures.
- Work collaboratively with the People Team to ensure payroll and workforce information is accurate and up to date.
Essential Requirements
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths at Grade C/Level 4 or above.
- A recognised Payroll Qualification.
- Significant experience working within a payroll environment.
- Experience independently managing or coordinating payroll processes.
- Excellent administration, organisational and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work accurately to strict deadlines.
- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Excel and payroll databases/systems.
- In-depth knowledge of UK payroll legislation and statutory requirements.
- Experience producing payroll reports and management information.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities.
