Role Purpose:
To set up, prepare, run and monitor SMT production equipment in line with approved job documentation and standard working methods, so that assemblies are produced safely, correctly and efficiently. The SMT Operator is responsible for carrying out full job setup, supporting first-off verification, maintaining control of the line during production, and ensuring that materials, machine setup, traceability and process checks are completed properly. The role is expected to work within defined instructions and approved programmes, without making unauthorised programme or process changes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Carry out SMT job setup from approved documentation, including works order, header file, magazine kit, machine job selection, feeder loading, printer setup, stencil loading, board support setup and conveyor setup.
- Verify that all materials loaded to the line match the job requirements, including part identity, orientation, quantity sufficiency and revision suitability, and ensure traceability requirements are followed during setup and production.
- Prepare the line for peer-reviewed startup checks, including magazine kit check and placement polarity check, and take an active part in first-off preparation and verification before the job is released into full production.
- Operate SMT equipment using approved existing programmes and standard methods across printers, placement equipment and associated line support equipment, according to training and competence level.
- Monitor the process during production to maintain stable running conditions, including paste condition and replenishment, feeder condition, component wastage, basic print quality, placement issues, and general line performance.
- Perform routine operator-level fault recovery within approved limits, such as recovering common feeder-related miss-picks, supporting fiducial recovery where trained, clearing standard stoppages, and restarting the process safely without altering controlled programme or process settings.
- Carry out basic in-process visual checks to confirm that boards being produced are not showing quality issues such as incorrect orientation, missing or misplaced components, poor print results or other visible defects.
- Record setup activity, production progress, downtime and required checks in Manutrax and any other applicable local records, ensuring work is logged clearly and accurately as the job progresses.
- Escalate any issue outside operator authority promptly to an SMT Technician or other competent person, particularly where the issue involves programme behaviour, process adjustment, quality concerns, repeated stoppages, equipment condition or non-standard recovery.
- Maintain good housekeeping, ESD discipline, consumables control, cleanliness and safe working practices across the SMT area, and operate equipment in accordance with training, safeguarding and PPE requirements.
- Work towards full cross-training across standard SMT operator tasks so that, once fully trained, the operator can run a standard job from setup through production in a safe, controlled and consistent manner.
