Active Tutoring – Part of Active Mentoring
We are looking for experienced, engaging and adaptable tutors to provide 1:1 education to young people within Alternative Provision.
Our pupils may have struggled to engage within mainstream education and often require a more individualised approach to learning. We are looking for tutors who can build strong relationships, adapt their teaching style and make education feel achievable again.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must:
- Have experience teaching, tutoring or supporting young people in education.
- Be confident delivering English and Maths, including Functional Skills.
- Be able to plan and deliver engaging 1:1 lessons tailored to the individual pupil.
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Be patient, reliable and able to build positive professional relationships with young people.
- Be confident working independently and managing their own sessions and workload.
Relevant teaching, tutoring or education qualifications are highly desirable.
Experience within Alternative Provision, SEND, SEMH, Functional Skills, PRUs or working with pupils who are disengaged from mainstream education would be particularly valuable.
About Us
Active Tutoring operates as part of Active Mentoring, providing tailored education and support for young people who may face challenges within traditional educational environments.
We believe education should adapt to the pupil — not expect every pupil to adapt to the same classroom.
Our approach combines 1:1 tuition, tailored learning and positive relationships to help young people re-engage with education and make meaningful academic progress.
Rather than simply working through generic worksheets, tutors are expected to understand the pupil’s current ability, identify gaps in learning and create sessions around their individual needs and goals.
The Role
As an Alternative Provision Tutor, you will work predominantly 1:1 with pupils, delivering a personalised curriculum with a particular focus on Functional Skills English and Maths.
Many of the young people we support may have experienced disrupted education, low confidence academically or difficulty engaging in a traditional classroom environment.
For that reason, this role requires more than academic knowledge.
We need tutors who can build trust, make learning engaging and find different ways of explaining something when the traditional approach isn’t working.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality 1:1 tutoring sessions.
- Teach Functional Skills English and Maths at appropriate levels.
- Assess pupils’ starting points and identify gaps in learning.
- Develop individual learning plans around each pupil’s needs and ability.
- Adapt lessons to different learning styles, interests and levels of engagement.
- Set realistic academic goals and monitor progress towards them.
- Help pupils rebuild confidence in their academic ability.
- Maintain accurate records of learning, progress and outcomes.
- Complete session reports and required documentation accurately and on time.
- Communicate professionally with schools, parents/carers and other professionals where required.
- Follow all safeguarding and child protection procedures.
What We’re Looking For
We’re particularly interested in tutors who are:
- Confident teaching English and Maths.
- Experienced in supporting young people who may have fallen behind academically.
- Patient and able to remain calm when a pupil is struggling or disengaged.
- Creative in the way they approach teaching.
- Comfortable moving away from traditional classroom methods when necessary.
- Able to build rapport while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Organised and reliable.
- Capable of working independently and taking ownership of a pupil’s educational progress.
- Passionate about helping young people recognise that they can succeed academically.
Safeguarding
Active Tutoring and Active Mentoring are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Successful applicants will be required to complete our safer recruitment process, including an Enhanced DBS check and relevant pre-employment checks.
Safeguarding and child protection training will be provided where required.
Why Join Us?
This is an opportunity to teach differently.
Rather than managing a classroom of 30 pupils, you will have the opportunity to work directly with individual young people and tailor education around what actually works for them.
We offer:
- Predominantly 1:1 tutoring.
- Flexible working arrangements.
- Ongoing training and professional development.
- A supportive and approachable management team.
- The freedom to be creative with how pupils are taught.
- The opportunity to make a measurable difference to a young person’s education and future.
We believe in giving our staff the trust and support to do their job properly, and in return we expect tutors who are professional, proactive, reliable and genuinely invested in the progress of their pupils.
How to Apply
Please apply with your CV and a short explanation of your tutoring/teaching experience, including any experience delivering English, Maths or Functional Skills.
Suitable applicants will then be sent an application form to complete. We cannot progress an application until this form has been returned.
If you have any questions about the role, please contact [email protected].
If you’re passionate about helping young people re-engage with education and believe that learning should be tailored to the individual, we’d love to hear from you.
