Experienced fire door fitter responsible for installing, repairing and servicing fire-resisting doors, frames and associated ironmongery to ensure compliance with building regulations, fire safety standards and client specifications. Works across residential, commercial, and public-sector sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Install new fire doorsets (FD30, FD60, and higher ratings), frames, intumescent seals, smoke seals and thresholds to manufacturer guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Assess, repair and refurbish existing fire doors and frames: adjust gaps, replace intumescent strips, fit new hinges/locks/closers, and repair damage to door cores/edges.
- Survey sites, produce accurate defect reports and job estimates; advise clients on required remedial works to achieve compliance.
- Fit and adjust fire door ironmongery (closers, panic hardware, multipoint locks, hinges, letterplates, vision panels) ensuring correct specification and certification.
- Ensure door clearances, latching, self-closing operation and smoke control meet BS 8214, relevant fire door certification and Building Regulations (Approved Document B).
- Undertake routine servicing, maintenance contracts and remedial works; log works and provide handover documentation, test certificates and compliance records.
- Work with project teams, site managers and clients to coordinate access, scheduling and permit-to-work arrangements.
- Maintain tools, materials and vehicle stock; order parts as necessary and keep accurate inventory records.
- Comply with health & safety procedures, risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), and control measures on site.
- Keep up to date with industry standards, product approvals and best practice for fire door installation and maintenance.
Qualifications & Certifications
- Proven experience (typically 2+ years) in fitting and repairing fire doors or joinery/carpentry background with relevant fire-door experience.
- Relevant NVQ/City & Guilds qualification in Joinery, Carpentry, or similar is advantageous.
- Certification in fire door inspection/installation (e.g., BM TRADA, Certifire, or other recognised training) preferred.
- CSCS card or equivalent site access certification for construction sites.
- Asbestos awareness; working at height; manual handling; and first aid training desirable.
- Full UK driving licence required.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong practical joinery skills and attention to detail.
- Good understanding of fire safety standards and applicable legislation (BS 8214, BS EN norms, Building Regs).
- Competent with hand and power tools; able to isolate and work safely around fire doors and ironmongery.
- Good written and verbal communication; ability to complete service reports, certificates and client correspondence.
- Customer-focused, reliable, punctual and able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Ability to prioritise tasks, manage time effectively and travel between sites.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Regular manual tasks including lifting doors, frames and hardware (team lifts for heavy items).
- Work may involve confined spaces, working at height, bending, kneeling and prolonged standing.
- Travel between sites; vehicle provided or mileage allowance.
- Flexibility for occasional out-of-hours call-outs or emergency repairs.
Desirable
- Experience with accredited fire-door contractors or within social housing / facilities management sectors.
- Knowledge of fire door certification schemes and ability to issue/complete compliance paperwork.
- Experience reading technical drawings and specifications.
