Due to continued growth, Veteran Fire Safety Ltd (VFS) is looking to recruit an experienced and suitably qualified Fire Engineer to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis.
This is an important technical role within the business, working across a varied portfolio of commercial, retail, hospitality, residential and complex buildings throughout the UK.
We are looking for someone who can confidently undertake fire engineering assessments, develop and review fire strategies, provide technical fire safety advice and support clients through design, refurbishment and compliance projects.
The successful candidate must have appropriate fire engineering qualifications, knowledge and practical experience to undertake fire engineering work independently and provide clear, technically robust advice to clients and project teams.
Key Responsibilities
The role will include:
- Preparing fire strategies and fire strategy reports for new and existing buildings.
- Reviewing and updating existing fire strategies following refurbishment, alterations or changes in building use.
- Undertaking means of escape assessments, including occupancy, exit capacity, travel distances and evacuation arrangements.
- Advising on compartmentation, fire resistance, structural fire protection and passive fire protection.
- Reviewing fire alarm, detection, emergency lighting, smoke control and suppression requirements.
- Providing fire engineering input into refurbishment, fit-out and construction projects.
- Reviewing architectural drawings and design proposals from a fire safety perspective.
- Undertaking site inspections and technical surveys.
- Identifying departures from recognised guidance and developing appropriate fire-engineered solutions where required.
- Liaising with architects, contractors, clients, Building Control and other members of the design team.
- Providing advice on compliance with relevant UK fire safety and Building Regulations requirements.
- Producing clear, professional and technically defensible reports.
- Providing technical support to VFS fire risk assessors and the wider compliance team when required.
Qualifications & Experience
Applicants must have:
- A relevant recognised qualification in Fire Engineering or a closely related fire safety discipline.
- Demonstrable experience producing and reviewing fire strategies.
- Strong working knowledge of Approved Document B, BS 9999, BS 9991 and other relevant British Standards and fire safety guidance.
- A sound understanding of UK Building Regulations and the principles of fire engineering.
- Experience assessing means of escape, compartmentation, fire resistance and active/passive fire protection systems.
- The ability to interpret architectural and technical drawings.
- Experience carrying out site inspections and producing professional technical reports.
- The competence and experience to provide fire engineering advice with an appropriate level of independence.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites throughout the UK.
Membership of a recognised professional fire safety or fire engineering body would be advantageous, together with progress towards or achievement of Incorporated or Chartered status.
