Project Engineer
The Project Engineer is a key delivery role within KML, supporting the engineering, planning, and execution of marine construction projects from tender through to offshore delivery and close-out. The role suits a motivated, adaptable, and resourceful engineer with a strong grounding in marine operations and the ability to operate effectively in both office and site/offshore environments.
The role spans engineering design, operational planning, technical assurance, and direct support to vessel and site teams, working closely with Project Managers, the Company fleet, and specialist disciplines.
Core Responsibilities
Project Engineering & Planning
- Assist with the preparation of engineering schedules, programmes, and project forecasts.
- Develop and deliver project documentation, including engineering methodologies, calculations, drawings, RAMS, lift plans, schedules, and technical reports.
- Support project planning, procurement, cost control, and programme delivery activities.
- Provide engineering input to vessel selection, marine spreads, equipment specification, and construction sequencing.
Design & Technical Development
- Design permanent and temporary marine structures using CAD software in cooperation with the naval architect and lifting engineer.
- Provide engineering support to fabrication, transportation, installation, and removal of marine and offshore structures.
- Support applied naval architecture and structural engineering tasks associated with marine construction works.
Marine, Nearshore & Offshore Operations
- Support the Company fleet and personnel during vessel operations and project execution.
- Provide engineering and operational support to:
- Rock armour delivery and placement
- Heavy lift and complex rigging operations
- Nearshore and marine civil construction works
- Subsea cable handling, pull-in, landing, burial, and protection
- Interface with vessel crews, deck teams, lifting personnel, ROV, and diving teams as required.
- Participate in offshore, nearshore, and site-based works, acting as an engineering focal point.
QHSE & Risk Management
- Contribute to Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for marine and offshore operations.
- Ensure engineering and operational activities comply with Company QHSE systems, CDM 2015, and relevant statutory requirements.
- Promote a proactive safety culture and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Commercial, Client & Stakeholder Interface
- Contribute to tendering activities, including technical inputs, methodologies, and bid documentation.
- Attend and contribute to client, contractor, and subcontractor meetings.
- Support the resolution of technical, commercial, and programme-related issues during project delivery.
- Represent client interests to contractors and subcontractors during fabrication and installation works as required.
Nature of Work
The Project Engineer will form part of a highly capable engineering team and will be involved across all stages of project delivery, from tender support through offshore execution and contract close-out. The role requires a strong emphasis on technical quality, accuracy, professionalism, and practical problem-solving.
The position offers exposure to a diverse portfolio of marine construction activities and the day-to-day operation of an integrated marine service contractor. Structured training, mentoring, and professional development support will be provided.
Required Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Degree-level (or equivalent) qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Proven project engineering or commercial engineering experience.
- Strong understanding of marine construction and offshore operations.
- Ability to manage multiple workstreams and support several projects simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including professional report writing.
- Computer literacy with CAD capability.
- Ability to problem-solve effectively in a dynamic, operational environment.
Desirable
- Experience in marine civils, heavy lift operations, or nearshore construction.
- Experience with subsea cable installation, pull-in, or landing works.
- Exposure to specialist or offshore support vessel operations.
- Personnel or site team management experience.
- Experience working with naval architects, lifting engineers, and fabrication yards.
Relationships & Reporting
The Project Engineer will report directly to the Project Manager or Business Manager. The role involves close liaison with the lifting engineer, fleet manager, naval architect, vessel crews, subcontractors, and clients to deliver projects safely and efficiently to challenging timescales.
Working Arrangements & Benefits
- Full-time role, nominally 5 days in 7, with flexibility to suit tidal working, offshore operations, and weekend working where required.
- Weekend working paid pro rata against salary; no standard overtime or hourly rates except in exceptional circumstances at the Company's discretion.
- Annual leave entitlement of 5.6 weeks (28 days) including bank holidays.
