Location: Spennymoor, Police Station

Hours/Contract: 40 hours, 7 – 5, Weekends included

Closing Date: 5pm, Monday 27th July 2026

The Role

Applicants MUST off completed their probationary period to apply for this post.

Applications are invited for the role of Police Constable on the Motorcycle Section, within Durham Roads and Armed Policing, Operations Command. This is a unique development opportunity for motivated officers who want to join the highly skilled unit, supporting and maintaining an environment where individuals can use the road with confidence, free from death, injury, damage, fear or loss and to tackle road user related criminality.

The successful candidates will work as part of the existing Motorcycle Section, planning and delivering motorcycle escort capability to facilitate a wide range of events including VIP visits, High Risk Prisoner movements, abnormal loads and sporting events. They will work in partnership to tackle the criminal and anti-social use of the roads and support wider national and local road casualty reduction initiatives. Where necessary they will also provide resilience to other specialist functions within DRAP including the Camera Enforcement Unit and Collision Investigation Unit.

These roles are for officers who in addition to delivering the specialist functions of the Motorcycle Section, will work closely with and in support of the wider Road Policing Unit. It is therefore a requirement that all officers will already be a Standard Response Driver in order to become Advanced Police Drivers, IPP accredited, Advanced Police Motorcycle Riders, and Motorcycle Escort Trained. Final appointment is conditional upon subsequently achieving a pass in all courses.

The selection process will include a number of stages. This is an outline of the stages within the selection process for the role of Motorcycle Police Constable – all of which should be successfully passed prior to any posting. Should an officer subsequently fail to qualify as an Advanced Driver/Rider once a course becomes available, they will be required to return to other operational duties.

STAGES OF SELECTION

Stage 1 - Advert (Closing date – 27/07/2026)

Stage 2 - Sift

Stage 3 - Interview (To be held week commencing 17/08/2026 – subject to availability)

Stage 4 - Advanced Police Riding Assessment

Successful applicants will then be required to undertake an Advanced Police Riding Assessment (unless already qualified as an Advanced Police Rider) and this will result in two levels as follows: -

 Unlikely to be able to pass an Advanced Riding Course – not to progress

 Suitable for an Advanced Riding Course – to progress
