Then step into The Story — where five remarkable collections of historic records, documents and objects come together to reveal the lives of the people who shaped County Durham.

These collections open windows onto attitudes and adventures, difficulties and differences, connections and communities. Theyre filled with unexpected items, hidden treasures and the everyday moments that make history human.

Our visitors use our collections to explore the people, places and events that made County Durham what it is today. Where they can search thousands of objects and documents to uncover hidden stories, trace family connections, follow global networks and discover county treasures waiting to be found.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

Were looking for a confident, people-focused Duty Manager to lead our front-of-house team and ensure every visit and event runs smoothly. Youll motivate staff, manage daily operations, handle sales and cash, support visitors, deliver short public tours, build rotas, promote donations and facilitate events.

This is a hands-on, people-centred role where no two days look the same. If youre organised, engaging and excited by heritage and hospitality, this is the role for you.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

The role requires a NVQ Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline. You should also have knowledge of Health and Safety issues, awareness of security and evacuation procedures, and a first aid at work qualification (or willingness to work towards it).

INTERVIEWS

It is anticipated that interviews will be held week commencing 6 or 13 July 2026.
