Overview

Job Title: Musical Director

About the Role

Groundlings Theatre Trust is seeking an enthusiastic, creative and collaborative Musical Director to join our production team for our Christmas pantomime, Pinocchio. You will be a key member of the Creative production team that will select the songs and music that aligns with the Director’s vision and inspire performers. You will be responsible for auditioning, teaching the score and maintaining vocal integrity for 4 amateur casts of approx.10 performers each, aged 7 – 18, and 5 professional cast members.

Key Responsibilities

Work collaboratively with the Director/Choreographer to fulfil the vision of the production, establish the overall musical tone and pacing with the effective integration of singing, acting, and movement
Lead the musical portion of auditions, assessing vocal abilities and pitching ranges
Lead singing rehearsals to teach all vocal parts, harmonies, and lyrics to the cast and rehearse soloists and ensemble groups, focusing on diction, intonation, and emotional delivery.
Working with the Tech (Sound) Manager, review, source, or edit official backing tracks to ensure they match the show's requirements and cuts and ensure they are properly cued, balanced, and timed.
Maintain musical standards and ensuring consistency of delivery and freshness throughout the entire run.
Empower and motivate participants to perform on stage and off to the best of their capabilities
Set an example of professional behaviour, that teaches respectful harmonious relationships and teamwork, centred on the purpose of creating a successful production
Attend all scheduled rehearsals, production meetings, and technical rehearsals
Able to keep children safe. Good knowledge of safeguarding to report any incidents to Groundlings staff

Person Specification

Experience teaching and coaching vocal performances, preferably within a production and with 8 - 18 year olds
Ability to play piano or keyboard confidently to teach vocal lines during rehearsals
Working knowledge of theatre producing practices and personnel management
Calm, friendly and professional demeanor, sense of humor encouraged!
Exercise good judgment and discretion
Punctual and reliable
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills, able to execute projects efficiently and according to schedule
Ability to work independently and to maintain a positive work atmosphere
Relevant training or qualification in dance
DBS checked

Dates: Rehearsals: 29 October to 9 December 2026 (Mainy on Sunday days). approx 60 - 70 hours in total
