PRINCIPAL PURPOSE
- To oversee daily transport operations.
- To ensure full compliance with health and safety regulations across transport and associated warehouse activities.
- Supervision of all transportation & associated safety management systems, supporting safe, efficient, and legally compliant delivery operations.
- Assist with coordination and Supervision of warehouse loading operations
RELATIONSHIPS
Directly responsible to: Shift Manager
Direct Reports: HGV and van delivery drivers
Indirect reporting: Warehouse Operatives
DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations
- To supervise daily transport activities, including routing, scheduling, and vehicle allocation.
- To ensure deliveries and collections are completed on time and in full (OTIF).
- To monitor driver performance, punctuality, and service standards.
- To coordinate with the warehouse and sales teams to resolve delivery issues.
- To support continuous improvement in transport efficiency and cost control.
Health & Safety Management
- To implement and monitor health & safety procedures across transport and warehouse operations.
- To carry out regular risk assessments and vehicle safety checks.
- To ensure compliance with UK H&S legislation (including HSE requirements).
- To conduct inductions, toolbox talks, and ongoing safety briefings for drivers and other staff as required.
- To investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, ensuring corrective actions are taken.
- To maintain accurate H&S records, documentation, and compliance logs.
Transport Compliance
- To ensure compliance with drivers’ hours regulations, tachograph rules, and the Working Time Regulations.
- To carry out regular driver license checks and vehicle compliance monitoring.
- To support fleet safety standards, including defect reporting and maintenance coordination.
- To ensure all transport activities meet legal and company requirements.
Team Supervision & Communication
- To supervise and support the business on a daily basis.
- To provide clear daily instructions and debriefings.
- To address operational issues and escalate where necessary.
- To promote a strong safety culture across all transport, warehouse and yard activities.
Reporting & Administration
- To maintain accurate transport and safety records.
- To monitor and report on KPIs (e.g. delivery performance, incidents, compliance rates).
- To support audits and inspections (internal and external).
- To assist management with operational and safety reporting.
General:
- To undertake any other Supervisory duties which may reasonably be required of you.
Legislative and Compliance:
- To ensure you comply with all statutory and legal obligations, including Health and Safety at Work.
- To ensure all company internal processes and administration are adhered to promptly.
- To be vigilant on all safety matters and notify your line manager of any potential non-compliance with regulations or any hazardous situation which may occur anywhere on company premises.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
- Good knowledge of UK transport legislation.
- Strong H&S background (IOSH or above desirable)
- Competent in conducting accident/near miss investigations.
- Strong organisational and scheduling skills.
- Demonstrable experience in conducting risk assessments and implementing control measures.
- Experience in managing vehicle compliance, including maintenance schedules, defect reporting and driver checks.
- Experience of H&S briefings or toolbox talks.
- IT literate.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Assertive but fair approach to enforcing standards.
Desirable
- Managing van/HGV drivers.
- Route planning or fleet optimisation.
- Conducting risk assessments
- Warehouse experience
- First Aid at Work certification.
- Fire Marshal/Fire Safety Training.
