Job Purpose and Summary:
To support the servicing, maintenance, and repair of gas CHP (Combined Heat and Power) systems while undertaking a structured apprenticeship program. The apprentice will gain the technical skills, safety awareness, and experience required to progress toward becoming a qualified CHP Service Engineer.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in the planned and reactive maintenance of gas CHP units across customer sites.
Shadow experienced engineers to learn diagnostic and fault-finding techniques.
Support the installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of CHP systems.
Record service data accurately using company reporting tools and software.
Maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicle in good condition (if applicable).
Attend all required training courses (on-the-job and classroom-based).
Build a working knowledge of CHP system components including engines, generators, controls, and gas systems.
Develop customer-facing professionalism while working on live sites.
Always adhere to health and safety protocols.
Key Relationships:
Service Management Team, Field Service Engineers, H&S, College Tutors/Mentors.
Qualifications and experience required:
- Essential: GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and Science (Grades 4–9 / A–C). Willingness to enroll in or currently undertaking a relevant Engineering Apprenticeship (e.g., Level 3 Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician or equivalent). Applicants must hold a valid UK drivers license.
- Desirable: BTEC or similar qualification in mechanical or electrical engineering.
Full UK driving license (or working towards one).
Skills and Competencies:
- Technical Skills: Strong interest in mechanical/electrical systems and energy technologies. Eagerness to learn and take initiative. Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Soft skills: Ability to follow instructions and apply safe working practices. Physically fit and comfortable working in plant rooms and industrial settings. IT literate with basic Microsoft Office knowledge. Ability to wear appropriate PPE and follow safe working practices.
KPIS / Success Measures
Training via external provider up to date and completed satisfactorily, on time.
Feedback from Engineers, Mentors and Line Manager.
