About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Senior Works Supervisor to oversee and coordinate the day-to-day operation of our structural steel fabrication facility. This ‘non-working’ supervision role will ensure the smooth flow of work throughout the facility, maintaining productivity, quality, safety, and delivery performance while providing strong shop floor leadership. Reporting directly to the Works Manager, this senior position will have responsibility for supervising the workshop personnel.
The successful candidate will be a strong leader, decisive and accountable, highly organised, have previous hands-on experience and be proactive. We are seeking a candidate who is focused on safety, performance and standards, who encourages continuous improvement and is able to be ‘firm but fair’.
This is a senior, permanent role within a billion-pound construction company Bowmer and Kirkland. The working hours are flexible and open to discussion at interview stage, between 06.00-18.00 Monday-Thursday and 06.00-15.00 Fridays, with overtime available. Our recently constructed state-of-the-art facility in Derby offers excellent working conditions and high-quality health & safety and quality standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead, motivate, and manage 40+ factory personnel across multiple processes and operational departments
- Coordinate daily workflow to ensure production targets and delivery schedules are met, identifying bottlenecks and taking corrective action where needed
- Provide clear daily direction to allocate labour effectively, ensuring all departments are operating efficiently and productively
- Oversee the full production flow from receipt of materials through to final dispatch, coordinating priorities between departments to maximise output
- Work in close collaboration with the Health & Safety Manager, QES Manager, and the wider management team to support the achievement of the highest standards across all production areas
- Understand, enforce and champion health & safety policies and procedures across the factory floor to ensure best practice
- Liaise closely with the Works Manager regarding production planning, capacity, and resourcing
- Act as the primary point of operational supervision beneath the Works Manager
Key Skills, Experience & Attributes
- Proven experience as a Foreman, Supervisor, or Team Leader in a steel fabrication / heavy engineering / industrial environment
- Strong working knowledge in key areas such fabrication, CNC processing machining, industrial painting, and logistics operations
- Conversant with health & safety legislation and best practice
- Excellent people management and leadership skills
- Strong understanding of production workflow management
- Ability to read and interpret detailed fabrication drawings and fabrication specifications
- Ability to make confident operational decisions
- Strong organisational, problem-solving and communication skills
- Ability to maintain discipline, accountability, and high working standards
- Requirement to be computer literate / have experience of digital management systems
