School Transport Driver (Private Hire/Hackney) – Derbyshire

We are currently recruiting reliable and professional Private Hire / Hackney Drivers to support local authority school transport services across Derbyshire, including routes for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
This is a self-employed position suitable for licensed Private Hire and Hackney drivers seeking regular contracted school transport work.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate school transport vehicles in accordance with road safety regulations and company policies
- Pick up and drop off students at designated locations on time, ensuring punctuality
- Transport children and young people safely to and from school
- Support SEND passengers where required
- Follow local authority safeguarding and transport procedures
- Maintain a calm, professional, and supportive environment
- Conduct routine vehicle inspections and basic maintenance checks to ensure vehicle safety and reliability
- Maintain accurate records of journeys, mileage, and any incidents during shifts
- Communicate clearly with school staff, parents, and students regarding schedules or any delays
- Ensure the vehicle is clean, well-maintained, and presentable at all times
- Adhere to all legal requirements related to Private Hire or Hackney Carriage licensing
- Complete routes in line with agreed timetables
Work Pattern
- Monday to Friday
- Term time only
- Morning and afternoon school runs
- Fixed routes and schedules
Requirements
- Valid Private Hire or Hackney Carriage Licence issued by either:
- Derbyshire County Council, or
- City of Wolverhampton Council
- Licensed and roadworthy vehicle
- Enhanced DBS certificate (or willingness to obtain)
- Full UK driving licence with a clean driving record
- Previous experience as a school transport driver, taxi driver, delivery driver, or commercial driver preferred
- Strong driving skills with a focus on safety and customer service
- Mechanical knowledge to carry out basic vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting
- Excellent communication skills in English
- Good knowledge of local routes and traffic regulations within Derbyshire
- Ability to work flexible hours aligned with school schedules
- Professional, punctual, and reliable
- SEN / school transport experience desirable but not essential
Training Requirements
Successful applicants must be willing to complete training where required, including:
- First Aid
- Safeguarding
- SEND Awareness
- PATS / Passenger Assistance Training
- MiDAS or NVQ Level 2 (for vehicles under 8 seats where applicable)
