Alton Valley are seeking an experienced Security Design Consultant to support the ongoing development, modification, and enhancement of access control systems within a high-security environment.
This is a specialist role focused on the design, documentation, and implementation of physical security and electronic access control solutions. Working across both IT infrastructure and physical security systems, you will provide technical expertise from the server layer through to field hardware and door infrastructure.
You will play a key role in establishing best practice, supporting engineering teams, and ensuring solutions are designed and documented to the highest standards within a highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop access control solutions for secure operational environments.
- Produce and maintain technical drawings, schematics, and design documentation using CAD/AutoCAD.
- Develop installation standards, wiring conventions, and technical documentation.
- Review and enhance existing access control infrastructure and system designs.
- Provide technical guidance and subject matter expertise to engineering and delivery teams.
- Support the integration of access control systems with associated security systems and infrastructure.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant security standards, regulations, and customer requirements.
- Work across the full solution lifecycle, from virtual server infrastructure through to physical door hardware.
- Assess and advise on lock selection, door hardware requirements, and security grading requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and standardisation across the security estate.
- Coach and support engineers, helping to improve technical capability and consistency of delivery.
Essential Requirements
Access Control Systems Expertise
- Extensive hands-on experience with Mercury access control hardware, including:
- LP1501
- LP1502
- MP1502
- Strong understanding of access control architecture and hardware deployment.
- Experience installing, configuring, and connecting access control controllers and readers.
Physical Security & Infrastructure Knowledge
- Strong understanding of:
- Access control reader technologies
- Cabling requirements and installation standards
- Commercial door hardware and locking systems
- Electronic locking principles
- Ability to work across both physical security systems and supporting IT infrastructure.
Security Standards & Compliance
- Knowledge of MPSA grading requirements, including:
- Grade 2 systems
- Grade 3 systems
- Understanding of supervised circuits, tamper detection, and monitoring principles.
Design & Documentation
- Experience producing technical designs and drawings using CAD or AutoCAD.
- Proven ability to create high-quality technical documentation, standards, and installation guides.
- Ability to define and document engineering best practices.
Industry Experience
- Senior-level experience (typically 10+ years) within security systems design, access control engineering, or related disciplines.
- Experience working within highly secure or regulated environments with strict compliance requirements.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience working within Ministry of Defence (MOD) environments.
- Familiarity with Joint Service Publications (JSPs) and associated security standards.
- Knowledge of fire alarm integrations and relay interfaces.
- Experience integrating access control systems with wider electronic security systems.
- Exposure to enterprise-scale security infrastructure and complex multi-site environments.
- Experience supporting system upgrades and modifications within live operational environments.

Pay: Up to £40,000.00 per year
