Full job description

Job Purpose

To set, operate and programme CNC milling machines to manufacture precision components to engineering drawings and customer specifications whilst maintaining high standards of quality, safety and productivity.

Key Responsibilities

Set up and operate CNC milling machines, including 3-axis, 4-axis and/or 5-axis machines as required.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models and technical specifications.
Produce precision-machined components to specified tolerances and quality standards.
Create, edit and optimise CNC programmes using Siemens, Fanuc, Heidenhain or other relevant control systems.
Select and install appropriate tooling, fixtures and work-holding equipment.
Conduct first-off inspections and in-process quality checks using precision measuring equipment.
Monitor machine performance and adjust offsets and tooling as required.
Maintain accurate production records and inspection documentation.
Carry out routine machine maintenance and housekeeping activities.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in machining processes and cycle times.
Work in accordance with Company quality procedures and health and safety requirements.
Support apprentices and less experienced operators when required.

Essential Skills and Experience

Proven experience as a CNC Miller in a Precision Engineering or Manufacturing environment.
Ability to set and operate CNC milling machines independently.
Strong understanding of engineering drawings and geometric tolerances.
Experience using precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, verniers, bore gauges and height gauges.
Knowledge of cutting tools, feeds, speeds and machining techniques.
Ability to work to tight tolerances and high-quality standards.
Good problem solving and fault-finding skills.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Desirable Skills and Experience

CNC programming experience.
Experience with Siemens, Fanuc, Heidenhain or Mazatrol controls.
Experience of 4-axis and 5-axis machining.
CAD/CAM experience using software such as Mastercam, Fusion 360, Edgecam or Hypermill.
Apprenticeship or formal engineering qualification.
Experience within aerospace, defence, automotive, medical or precision engineering sectors.

Qualifications

Essential

Time-served apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience.

Desirable

NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, BTEC, HNC or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline.
