Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons is seeking to appoint a Hospital Technician (Night Worker) to join our dedicated and professional team working within the Equine Hospital, based in Exning. This is a part-time position, working 30 hours per week, 00:00 to 08:00, Monday to Thursday (4 nights). This will be a 13 month fixed term position to cover maternity leave with a start date of 5th October 2026.
The role will suit a versatile, reliable and motivated individual with outstanding attention to detail who is looking for a rewarding position within the equine veterinary industry. Please note, this is a physically demanding role that will require work outside in varied weather conditions.
The main responsibilities are to work alongside the night team to assist with the daily care and welfare of hospitalised patients, primarily responsible for bringing horses from their stable to the clinical areas. Applicants should be both confident and competent handling all types, sizes and ages of horses and ponies to assist veterinary and nursing staff while they carry out examinations and procedures. Our equine patients range from foals, youngstock and breeding stock (including mares and stallions), to racehorses, competition horses and pleasure horses and ponies. When working in theatre you will assist the theatre nurses in all aspects of theatre and equipment preparation, to ensure that high standards of patient care and cleanliness are maintained at all times.
The successful candidate will possess good general knowledge and experience in horse care and stable duties. Experience of the equine industry is essential; however full training will be provided to further expand your skills were necessary.
The main aspects of this role include (but are not limited to):
Yard role overview:
· Work alongside the night nurses to ensure checks, medications and overnight care is completed for all cases on site.
· Responsible for horse holding and handling, to allow vets and nurses to carry out investigations, treatments and procedures including standing surgery.
· Assisting with admission of elective and emergency cases.
· Responsible for organisation, stocking and cleaning of designated clinical areas and yard.
· Trotting, lunging and hand grazing horses as necessary.
· Assisting with hospital and MICU laundry.
· Following infection control protocols- including assist yard team with stable decontamination.
Theatre role overview:
· Assisting the on call nurse in laying up instruments for surgery.
· Ensuring the theatre is set up in the appropriate way for the procedure.
· Helping to prepare horses for surgery and transferring them to theatre. This includes fitting hobbles and positioning on the table.
· Assisting the surgeons during scrubbing in and gowning for surgery.
· Assisting the nurse during surgery.
· Assisting with the removal of the horse to recovery.
· Cleaning theatres between surgeries.
· Re-stocking, cleaning and tidying the theatre and the theatre preparation area.
· Assisting the theatre nurse and anaesthetist with the maintenance of equipment.
· Assisting with sterilising, cleaning and re-stocking.
· Any other duties reasonably requested by the Practice.
You will never be expected to carry out a task without supervision for which you do not have sufficient training.

Pay: £27,646.81-£28,903.68 per year
